POSITION OVERVIEW
BronxWorks Adult Literacy & ABE Program seeks a dedicated and compassionate Adult Literacy and Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructor to deliver high-quality instruction to adult learners across varying levels of literacy competency from foundational literacy through HSE/GED preparation. The instructor will support students in building essential academic skills in literacy mathematics science and social studies with sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds experiences and learning needs of adult learners. This position reports to the Assistant Program Director and works collaboratively within a team committed to meeting DYCD funder benchmarks and program requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Deliver engaging differentiated learner-centered instruction in literacy mathematics science and social studies across ABE and HSE/GED levels
Work effectively with students of varying levels of literacy competency from beginning readers through advanced HSE candidates
Administer and interpret TABE assessments to determine student placement and measure learning gains
Facilitate remote asynchronous coursework using digital learning platforms
Maintain accurate and up-to-date student attendance progress records and required funder documentation
Collaborate with program staff to meet DYCD performance benchmarks and reporting requirements
Participate in professional development activities and staff meetings
Demonstrate cultural competency and sensitivity to the challenges and lived experiences of adult learners
Contribute to a supportive inclusive and goal-oriented learning environment
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Bachelors degree in Education English Liberal Arts or a related field
Experience working with adult learners in an educational or community-based setting
Demonstrated ability to teach or willingness to learn to teach literacy mathematics science and social studies at the ABE and adult education level
Experience or comfort working with students across a wide range of literacy levels
Familiarity with or ability to learn TABE assessment administration and interpretation
Comfort with technology; ability to facilitate remote and asynchronous learning
Strong organizational and communication skills
Collaborative team player with a commitment to shared program goals
Preferred
Experience with DYCD-funded adult education literacy or ABE programs
Familiarity with HSE/GED curriculum and instructional frameworks
Background in adult learning theory and trauma-informed instructional practice
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Ability to stand walk or sit for long periods of time.
Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather including inclement weather if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
