Job Description:

With direction from the New Material Development Manager and Product & Materials Analyst this position is responsible for planning leading and performing a wide variety of analyses and evaluations on materials utilized in paperboard packaging substrates and finished carton structures in support of Global R&D (GRD) for new product development for Fresh Produce Packaging. This role involves regular exposure to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables andbased fully onsite Monday through Friday at our Louisville CO location.

Responsibilities may include any of the following:

• Perform chemical physical structural and performance testing of various substrates (paper board film laminations etc.) carton structures and prototype/finished products in accordance with industry-standard procedures from sources such as ASTM TAPPI ISTA and any other internal (GPI-based) or external (customer) specifications and requirements.
• Analytical methods and techniques employed may include any of the following:

• FTIR: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
• DSC: Differential scanning calorimetry
• SEM: Scanning electron microscopy (with EDS electron dispersive spectroscopy)
• Instron Universal Test Apparatus Analysis for the determination of tensile and compressive-type properties of materials.
• Optical microscopy and sample imaging
• Physical test evaluations on paperboard/structures including COF stiffness score bend and tear.
• Temperature/humidity testing of substrates structures and cartons/products for environmental integrity at various conditions.
• Visual observation and comparison

• Develop new test methods and procedures when required in support of the analysis of produce packaging materials incorporating and utilizing the expertise acquired from education work experience and knowledge obtained working in the GRD Group.
• Writes and issues detailed data/science-based reports emails and presentations stating results conclusions and future course of action from the lab work completed and data obtained. Communicates the projects critical information obtained with customers and various levels of management in a concise and scientific manner that is data-driven and scientifically sound.
• Appropriately uses all Lab/test equipment within the GRD-Louisville facility.

Desired Skills & Experience

• 5-7 semesters (or equivalent) of progress toward BA/BS in a Science/Engineering-based technical degree such as Chemistry Mechanical Engineering Materials Science Physics Packaging Science etc. BA/BS degree preferred.
• Experience in a working physical/chemical lab environment achieved through school/university and/or work experience/job functions.
• Packaging chemical physical and /materials science test experience acquired through work/co-op/internship within the packaging materials or fresh produce industries is a strong asset to this position.
• Additionally familiarization with any of the various analytical methods noted or other test instrumentation and advanced materials analysis experience and knowledge is also a definite benefit.
• Additional skills and coursework knowledge and/or experience in beverage/food packaging structural design and paperboard science is also beneficial.

Physcial Demands:

• Frequent bending stooping squatting as well as frequent movement throughout the facility for extended periods of time up to 8-hour.
• Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
• Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
• Use of various office hand tools or electrical equipment.
• Employee is required to wear steel toe shoes safety glasses and hearing protecting when in the manufacturing area.
• While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to airborne particles and times of increased heat and humidity.
• The noise level in the immediate work environment is normally quiet however requires exposure to a noisy manufacturing environment.

Pay Range: $53500.00-$59400.00
