Job Summary

Position Overview

The DK-8 Math Specialist / Instructional Coach serves a dual role designed to drive mathematical excellence and accelerate student learning. As a Math Specialist (0.75 Full-time Equivalent - FTE) the individual provides direct targeted math intervention to elementary and 7th-8th grade students leads data-driven instructional planning and supports curriculum implementation across the elementary and middle school buildings. As an Instructional Coach (0.25 FTE) the individual provides instructional support mentoring and professional development to teachers in grades DK through 8th grade fostering evidence-based math pedagogy continuous teacher growth and improved student outcomes.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelors degree in Education or a related field (Masters degree in Education Curriculum & Instruction or Mathematics preferred).
  • Teaching Certification: A valid Michigan teaching certificate with appropriate elementary and/or middle school endorsements (Math endorsement preferred).
  • Teaching Experience: Extensive teaching experience in grades DK8 with a proven track record of student growth and achievement in mathematics.
    • Completion of Math Recovery training strongly preferred (those not trained in Math Recovery must be willing to participate in training throughout their first year in this role).
  • Instructional & Math Expertise: In-depth knowledge of DK8 mathematics standards mathematical learning progressions diagnostic assessments and multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).
  • Coaching & Mentoring Skills: Strong coaching and mentoring abilities with experience providing non-evaluative constructive feedback. Experience in Cognitive Coaching preferred.
  • Data Analysis: Proficiency in analyzing standardized benchmark and diagnostic data to guide targeted student interventions and inform classroom instruction.
  • Adult Learning & Leadership: Demonstrated leadership with experience designing facilitating and supporting professional development for adult learners.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to establish trusting relationships with staff administrators students and families.
  • Technology Skills: Proficiency in educational technology digital math tools learning management systems and data-tracking platforms.
  • Continuous Learner: A growth mindset committed to staying current with research-based best practices in mathematics education and instructional coaching.

Key Responsibilities

Math Specialist Duties (0.75 FTE)

  • Direct Student Intervention: Provide high-quality targeted math interventions (Tier 2 and Tier 3) to individuals and small groups of students at Crossroads and West Oakview Elementary.
  • Data & Progress Monitoring: Administer diagnostic math assessments regularly monitor student progress and adjust intervention strategies based on data.
  • MTSS & Problem-Solving: Actively participate in building MTSS Grade-Level and Child Study teams to identify students needing math support determine appropriate interventions and track efficacy.
  • Curriculum & Materials: Assist in selecting organizing and implementing math intervention materials concrete manipulatives and digital resources.
  • Family Engagement: Communicate student progress to families and provide strategies to support mathematical learning at home.
Instructional Coach Duties (0.25 FTE Grades DK8)
  • Instructional Coaching: Collaborate with DK8 teachers to establish instructional goals co-plan math lessons and implement effective research-based teaching strategies. Funded through grant funds.
  • Observations & Feedback: Conduct non-evaluative classroom observations and facilitate reflective coaching conversations to support teacher professional growth.
  • Modeling & Co-Teaching: Model effective math lessons demonstrate mathematical talk routines and co-teach alongside classroom teachers.
  • Professional Development: Design and facilitate job-embedded professional learning Learning Labs workshops and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) focused on DK8 math pedagogy and standards alignment.
  • Data-Informed Instruction: Support teachers in analyzing classroom math data to differentiate instruction and address learning gaps across grade levels.
  • Technology & Innovation: Assist teachers in seamlessly integrating educational technology and digital math tools into daily instruction.
  • Culture of Growth: Promote a collaborative school culture focused on continuous improvement strong mathematical mindsets and high expectations for all learners.
Terms of Employment
  • This position follows the terms and benefits outlined in the Northview Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Evaluated by the Building Principal; reports to the Director of Curriculum and building principals.
  • FTE Split: 0.25 Instructional Coach (Title II Grant Funded) / 0.75 Math Specialist. This position follows Northview Public Schools 2026-2027 academic calendar and the duty times for Crossroads Middle School on Mondays Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays and West Oakview Elementary duty times on Wednesdays. The position includes travel between buildings on Mondays Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays.
