Location: Troy AL Department: CNC Fabrication Operations Reports To: Manufacturing Engineering Manager
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced CNC Applications Engineer to support advanced manufacturing operations through CNC programming process development and machining optimization. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of cutting tools multi-axis machining CAD/CAM programming and CNC machine controls. This role is responsible for developing efficient machining processes improving productivity supporting new product development and providing technical expertise across a variety of CNC platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and optimize CNC programs for multi-axis machining centers including:
Vertical and horizontal machining centers
5-axis milling machines
Mill-turn centers
Swiss-type lathes
Multi-spindle turning machines
Create and maintain CNC programs using Mastercam and CAD-generated models.
Troubleshoot machining processes tooling issues machine performance and program-related challenges.
Perform machine run-offs prove-out programs and validate manufacturing processes.
Develop tooling strategies and setup documentation for machinists and operators.
Identify and implement process improvements to increase machine productivity quality and throughput.
Support manufacturing process development for new and existing products.
Provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) input during new product development activities.
Collaborate with engineering quality operations and production teams to resolve technical issues and improve manufacturing performance.
Lead process improvement initiatives focused on cost reduction quality enhancement and cycle time optimization.
Evaluate cutting tools equipment fixtures and manufacturing technologies to improve operational efficiency.
Work closely with equipment suppliers tooling vendors and material providers to implement best practices.
Support quality control initiatives and root cause investigations.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Engineering Manufacturing Engineering Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline; equivalent experience may be considered.
Minimum 5 years of hands-on CNC programming experience in a manufacturing environment.
Strong experience with:
5-axis milling operations
Multi-axis turning and Swiss machining
CNC setup and operation
Cutting tool selection and optimization
Proficiency with CAD/CAM software preferably Mastercam.
Strong understanding of G-code and macro programming.
Experience troubleshooting CNC machining processes and improving productivity.
Working knowledge of various CNC machine controls and machining platforms.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings GD&T and manufacturing specifications.
Strong analytical problem-solving and project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Engineering or related technical field.
Experience with SolidWorks.
Knowledge of FANUC controls robotics and PLC systems.
Lean Manufacturing experience.
Six Sigma methodology knowledge and application.
Kaizen event participation and facilitation experience.
5S implementation experience.
Exposure to new product introduction (NPI) and DFM reviews.
