Job Summary

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America serving Cook DuPage Will Lake Kane and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe reliable and efficient commuter service.

Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metras fixed assets including buildings stations bridges track electrical telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects and Communications and Maintenance. The department is staffed by more than 700 employees.

The Building and Bridges (B&B)Mechanic Assistantensures proper construction and maintenance of culverts sanitary sewers storm sewers water lines fences and retaining walls buildings station platforms highway grade crossings and general masonry and carpentry to guarantee the safe and efficient operation of work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat cold rain and snow. Perform otherrelated duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

This is a Union position. Starting pay rates may vary based on entry rates in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

  1. High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  2. Construction/Maintenance experience required.
  3. Must be able to lift carry and move equipment and materials weighing up to 60-70 pounds.
  4. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
  5. Must be willing to travel within Metras 6-county region.

Preferences:

  1. Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
  2. Carpentry experience
