Job Summary
AECOM is actively seeking an Archaeologist I to join the Cultural Resource Team in our Phoenix Arizona office. This is a full-time permanent employment position. You will be an integral member of our cultural resources team supporting the successfully executing all aspects of project implementation. The Archaeologist I primarily performs fieldwork under the supervision of a Crew Chief Field Director and/or Principal Investigator but could include tasks in a laboratory setting under the direction of a laboratory manager and be involved in report preparation. Field projects will primarily be located in Arizona but opportunities for work in other states may be available. Candidates will need flexibility to travel overnight for field work sessions.
This position is expected to begin ASAP.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Working collaboratively with guidance on how to complete work activities that are unfamiliar.
- Conducting cultural resource surveys and archaeological monitoring and excavations.
- Documenting archaeological and historical resources; must be able to take accurate field notes and complete forms.
- Using digital devices to record field data.
- Using a digital camera to photo-document artifacts features and sites and keeping an accurate photo log.
- Processing artifacts (washing labeling and cataloging).
- Consulting with a supervisor about unusual problems.

Qualifications :
Minimum Requirements:
- BA/BS in Anthropology Archaeology History or a closely related field.
- Must be willing to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout Arizona and the Southwest.
- Valid U.S. Drivers License required to visit project sites clients and other AECOM offices.
- As a condition of employment selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review.
- Due to the nature of the work US Citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some prior experience with a wide range of field methodologies including archaeological survey testing excavation and monitoring.
- Knowledge of field survey and excavation techniques ability to process (wash catalog and label) recovered archaeological artifacts properly fill out field and laboratory forms.
- Strong attention to detail with proven ability to follow specific instructions.
- Ability to perform manual work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable conditions including heat cold moisture and dryness; working alone in isolated/remote areas; performing repetitive bending and stooping standing/walking power gripping (hand tools levers etc.) and fine hand movements; lifting 25 to 75 pounds unassisted; wearing personal protective equipment including safety glasses/goggles gloves safety shoes/boots hard hat long-sleeve shirts and snake guards; working with arms above shoulder level; climbing ladders or stairs and working at heights or in confined spaces; working safely around heavy moving dangerous equipment; operating of vehicles; and performing keyboard/mouse operations.
- Knowledge and understanding of equipment and technology used to collect and record archaeological data including GPS applications and Microsoft applications.
- Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with other project staff.
- Flexibility to travel overnight and out of state for up to a month or more at a time.
- General familiarity with cultural resource management protocols and processes including compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and National Environmental Policy Act.
- Some experience with conducting laboratory analysis of both prehistoric and historic material.
