Job Summary

Job Title: Accounting Supervisor

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Department: Business & Finance

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

SUMMARY:

Assist the Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance in the administration of the districts business affairs. Apply principles of accounting to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports. Maintain district financial records.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelors degree in accounting (required)

Certified Public Accountant certificate preferred

EXPERIENCE:

Three to five years of accounting experience

CERTIFICATES LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

As required by the Texas Education Agency

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices
  • Strong analytical organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use calculator (10 key by touch)
  • Ability to use personal computer and software to develop spreadsheets and produce required reports
  • Proficient skills in typing keyboarding and file maintenance
  • Ability to work with numbers in accurate and rapid manner to meet established deadlines
  • Ability to interpret policy procedures and data

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accounting
  1. Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries to accounts such as general ledger accounts documenting business transactions.
  2. Assists Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance in the preparation of the budget and development of long and short range objectives for the business operations of the district.
  3. Establish modify document and coordinate implementation of accounting and accounting control
  4. Devise and implement system for general accounting.
  5. Oversee preparation of monthly bank reconciliations.
  6. Perform monthly cash flow analysis.
  7. Maintain the district investment portfolio.

Policies Reports and Law
  1. Analyze financial information detailing assets liabilities and capital and prepare balance sheet profit and loss statement and other reports to summarize current and projected district financial position.
  2. Assists Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance with preparation of financial statements and budget amendments for presentation to board.
  3. Maintain physical and computerized files and records.
  4. Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and local board policy in the area of accounting.
  5. Comply with all district routine and regulations.
  6. Assists Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance with preparation and publishing of the comprehensive annual financial report in compliance with Association of School Business Officer (ASBO) standards.

Purchasing and Inventory
  1. Assists Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance to maintain accurate and current computerized inventory records of the districts fixed and movable assets.
  2. Assists Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance to receive and open bids; tabulate results and prepares written recommendations.
  3. Maintain accurate and current computerized inventory records of the districts fixed and movable assets.

Communication
  1. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisor.
  2. Effectively communicate with colleagues.

Administration

  1. Works with administrators principals directors and staff regarding budget and accounting issues.
  2. Work with district personnel to project student enrollment staffing needs building and facilities needs energy needs capital equipment needs and other cost items for district and individual school improvement.

Personnel Management
  1. Assists Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance to prepare review and revise business department job descriptions.
  2. Assists Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance to develop training options and/or improvement plans to ensure exemplary business operations.
  3. Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.

Other
  1. Coordinate and prepare all financial billing aspects of the MAC/SHARS program.
  2. Maintain confidentiality.
  3. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  4. Participate in meetings and special events as assigned.
  5. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise and evaluate performance of assigned accounting personnel

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions proportions percentages area circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in personal computers Excel Lotus 123 Access PowerPoint Microsoft Word and other business software is preferred.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. Repetitive hand motions and prolonged use of a computer is required of this employee. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Occasional light lifting and carrying is required.

Districtwide and state travel is required. This job requires the ability to handle and balance multiple demands at the same time. This position also requires meeting deadlines with severe time constraints interacting with the public and staff and enduring irregular or extended work hours.

The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee regularly works indoors. The noise level is usually quiet.
