The Role
This is not a typical GCSE teaching role.
Whilst subject knowledge is important this role is first and foremost about building positive trusted relationships with young people who have often experienced significant barriers to learning. Many of our learners have struggled in mainstream educational settings and may have experienced trauma disrupted education poor attendance anxiety low confidence and/or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
The successful tutor will understand that progress begins with trust. The ability to motivate encourage and connect with learners is just as important as the ability to teach Maths/English. You will help learners overcome barriers build resilience and self-belief and develop the confidence and stamina needed to work towards their GCSE qualifications.
Our learners benefit from smaller class sizes regular breaks personalised support and a flexible approach that meets them where they are. We are looking for someone who is patient adaptable trauma-informed and committed to helping young people achieve success on their own terms.
We use an established GCSE online learning and examination provider giving learners access to a structured course learning resources assessments and examination entry. Tutors will not be expected to design a GCSE curriculum from scratch. Instead the role is to facilitate and enhance learning through the existing programme providing subject expertise guidance encouragement and tailored support to help learners progress successfully towards their qualifications.
Delivery Model
Delivery will be a mixture of 1:1 face-to-face tuition 1:1 online tuition and small group sessions (typically 46 learners).
Small group sessions are designed to provide a supportive and engaging learning environment while maintaining the individualised approach that our learners require.
Tutors will be supported by a Learning Mentor during small group sessions enabling learners to access additional encouragement pastoral support and help with engagement where needed.
The successful tutor will be comfortable adapting their approach to meet the needs of individual learners and small groups balancing academic progress with relationship-building and learner wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver GCSE Maths/English tuition at Foundation and Higher levels.
Support learners in working through the online GCSE course and associated learning materials.
Adapt teaching and learning activities to meet individual learner needs.
Create an inclusive supportive and engaging learning environment.
Support students with revision techniques exam preparation and study skills.
Build learners confidence resilience independence and readiness for examinations.
Monitor learner progress and contribute to review and support planning where required.
Work collaboratively with Learning Mentors and the wider team to support learner engagement and achievement.
About You
Strong knowledge of the GCSE Maths/English curriculum.
Experience teaching tutoring mentoring or supporting young people in education.
An understanding of the barriers faced by young people who may have experienced trauma disrupted education anxiety low confidence or SEND.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Patient adaptable and committed to helping young people succeed.
Relevant qualifications in Maths Education or a related field are desirable.
