The Sugar Milling Research Institute NPC (SMRI) is a world leader in the science and technology of sugarcane processing. The strategic objective of the SMRI is to support its member companies by enabling the sustainability of the sugarcane processing industries in South and southern implementing our strategy we are seeking to appoint a competent self-motivated individual to join our dynamic team.
The key responsibilities of the Process Laboratory Technician position are: (1) maintenance of the SMRI building and utilities and the Pilot Plant Laboratory at the SMRI (2) providing technical support to the SMRI research staff and (3) carrying out research and consulting project work at any of the South African and southern African sugar factories when required.
Responsibilities Include:
Operation of pilot plant equipment for sugarcane processing for research and consulting purposes
Specialised equipment and building maintenance
Ensure specialised equipment is properly maintained and operated including regular inspections and arranging for scheduled maintenance
Liaise with specialist service providers to resolve breakdowns rapidly to ensure minimal interruption of utilities.
Monitor facility equipment capex and maintenance budget status on a regular basis
In conjunction with management team identify equipment breakdown risks and recommend equipment replacement where necessary for budgeting purposes
Conducting of experimental work in the pilot plant laboratory and at sugar factories
Preparation and carrying out experimental work in the laboratory and in factories by operating apparatus according to instruction or standard operating procedures
Safely storing and disposing of chemicals
Collection and preparation of samples according to standard procedures
Research Staff Support
Provide support for Research staff at the SMRI and sugar factories
Collection of samples from factories including appropriate preservation
Implement good housekeeping principles conduct required safety inspections and fulfil the role of a SHE Representative and First Aider in accordance with company and legislative requirements.
Procurement
Assist research officers with procurement of equipment supplies and chemicals as required
Minimum Requirements:
At least five (5) years experience in a laboratory environment preferably involving research or pilot plant operation with a minimum qualification of N Dip Engineering or Chemistry. A valid drivers license. Exposure to the sugar industry and strong organisation and administrative capabilities will be highly advantageous.
Proven Ability:
Good problem solving and decision-making skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word Excel Outlook)
Ability to work in difficult physical factory environments
Ability to work well independently and together as part of a team
Working with a safety conscious attitude and demonstrating good and safe work habits
Eagerness to learn and apply newly acquired skills
Strong organizational skills
Excellent administrative skills
