Experience
Renal Nurse
A renal nurse plays a crucial role in caring for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). My roles and responsibilities include:
1. Patient Care and Education:
Educating Patients: Renal nurses educate patients and their families about kidney disease, its progression, and various treatment options. They help patients understand dietary restrictions, fluid management, and lifestyle modifications.
Monitoring and Assessment: Renal nurses assess patients before and during dialysis treatments. They record medical information, monitor vital signs, and identify any adverse reactions.
Fluid and Electrolyte Balance: These nurses manage fluid balance and electrolyte levels in patients with CKD. They ensure that patients receive appropriate dialysis treatments and medications.
Infection Control: Renal nurses implement infection control measures to maintain a safe environment for patients.
2. Dialysis Procedures:
Hemodialysis: Renal nurses administer hemodialysis treatments, which involve filtering blood through a machine to remove waste products. I check patients’ vitals, prepare and update nursing care plans, and monitor for complications.
Peritoneal Dialysis: Renal nurses oversee peritoneal dialysis, where patients perform dialysis at home. I educate patients on the procedure, ensure proper technique, and address any concerns.
3. Kidney Transplantation:
Preparation and Post-Operative Care: Renal nurses play a vital role in kidney transplant procedures. I explain the transplant process to patients and their families, prepare patients for surgery, and provide post-operative care.
Monitoring and Wound Care: After transplantation, renal nurses monitor patients for signs of infection, ensure wound healing, and manage immunosuppressive medications.
4. Organ Recovery Coordination:
Transplant Coordination: Renal nurses may work as organ recovery coordinators. I facilitate organ donation and transplantation by coordinating with medical teams, donor families, and recipients.
