Public Desk Assistant-2

Join an award winning Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library has an onsite part-time, 22 hours/week Public Desk Assistant position open. We are looking for a personable individual to provide library services to our customers: finding materials, assisting users with library technology, reserving library meeting spaces, and registering for library programs and events. This position involves extensive interaction with the public to provide customers access to the full range of library services via in-person, telephone, online, and other modes of delivery.

Hours are as follows and requires flexibility.

  • Mondays - Thursdays 5:00pm – 9:00pm
  • Fridays 8:30am – 1:00pm
  • The 3rd Sunday of the month 11:30am-5:00pm
  • The 5th Sunday of the month 11:30am-5:00pm on rotation

The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. Starting pay $15.65-$19.58, based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

The Public Desk Assistant is responsible for providing customer service at the Reference desk, assesses and fulfills patrons’ needs for information and materials, assists in delivering programs, and maintains departmental procedures and policies. This position requires good organizational and communication skills and the flexibility and training to move from task to task in a team environment. Specific responsibilities will be assigned by the supervisor on the basis of experience, skills, and specific needs of the department and number of hours worked.

  2. Ability to learn various job functions, perform them correctly, and understand the necessity in overall library operations.
  3. Ability to independently function efficiently in a changing and varied environment with frequent interruptions.
  4. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details.
  5. Ability to follow all library policies and procedures.
  6. Demonstrates commitment to incorporating principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into everyday work.

Requirements & Skills for the Position:

  • Positive and friendly attitude is a must.
  • Prior customer service experience required.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with a variety of technology including Windows and IOS platforms, Microsoft Office and mobile devices.
  • Ability to perform information searches and demonstrate proficiency in job-related software.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides reference services to patrons at the public service desk.
  • Assists in delivering classes and programs to meet community needs.
  • Assists in providing technology and equipment assistance to patrons.
  • Handles financial transactions and maintains cash drawer.
  • Sets up equipment for library programs and public meetings.
  • Maintains printers in Reference Department.
  • Keeps apprised of Library programs, policies and procedures and building layout to assist patrons most effectively.
  • Participates in relevant training, continuing education and/or professional development.

Education and/or experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent knowledge and skill in areas related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Customer service experience is required.
  • Knowledge of eBooks and reference resources.
