Job Summary
NQ Dry Tropics is seeking a Technical Officer with a background in landscape repair monitoring and evaluation to join a dynamic and diverse team committed to improving soil stability and landscape condition.
The successful applicant will be passionate about working with landholders community groups and partners to translate ecological knowledge into practical on-ground outcomes.
They will design and implement on-ground monitoring activities and deliver a range of landscape repair communications activities that support landscape resilience outcomes across the Burdekin Dry Tropics region.
They will work closely with a multidisciplinary team including project managers field delivery staff and technical specialists to restore eroded landscapes through erosion remediation and grazing management actions. This will include providing technical support for the design delivery and monitoring of erosion control and grazing practice change projects in the region as well as delivering training and on-ground support for landholders seeking to improve their erosion management capacity.
This is a permanent full-time position based in Townsville supported by secure multi-year funding through to 2030 providing strong role stability and opportunities for longer-term professional development.

- a passion for biodiversity natural resource management (NRM) and landscape-scale outcomes;
- experience delivering monitoring extension engagement or education activities in environmental or NRM contexts;
- excellent organisational skills including the ability to coordinate activities and events on time and within scope;
- the ability to work effectively in teams as well as independently in field-based environments; and
- working knowledge of common digital tools such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office with ArcGIS experience desirable but not essential.

We are an independent not-for-profit company supporting communities in the Burdekin Dry Tropics of North Queensland to sustainably manage land water soil plants and animals. We are a trusted and respected leader in natural resource management with strong relationships with community corporate and government partners.

From time to time the role may also provide opportunities for interstate and intrastate travel to support collaboration knowledge sharing and professional development associated with broader natural resource management initiatives. Collaboration adaptability and a strong field presence are central to how the team operates.

Essential
- Qualifications and Technical Expertise: Tertiary qualifications in agronomy natural resource management environmental science or a related field or demonstrated equivalent experience. Demonstrated knowledge of soil and water processes the links between vegetation management and landscape stability and grazing management practices that maintain land condition.
- Extension and Engagement Experience: Demonstrated experience technical skills and knowledge in developing and successfully delivering extension or education activities particularly to grazing audiences.
- Communication and Collaboration: Strong written oral and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work effectively independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders and contractors. Ability to produce concise reports and information briefs including the ability to use mapping databases and other relevant tools to prepare those documents.
- Project Planning and Organisational Skills: Well-developed organisational skills including the ability to plan coordinate and deliver monitoring engagement activities events and field-based initiatives in a busy project environment.
- Technical and Digital Capability: The ability to use Google Workspace Microsoft Office GIS software in particular ArcGIS as well as proficiency in field data collection (including LCATs VegCats and similar field assessment tools) and the use of survey and GPS systems.
- Field and Operational Capacity: A current C class drivers licence and the ability to travel extensively within the Burdekin Dry Tropics region and work safely and effectively in outdoor and remote environments. The role will include travel outside standard hours with nights away from home.
