Description of Work

This is a repost. Previous applicants are currently under review and do not need to reapply. The primary purpose of the Nurse Consultant I position is to improve and enhance the quality of patient care through consultation teaching/instructing role modeling and assisting in researching the standards policies procedures and initiatives of the Nursing Department. This position possesses technical expertise in psychiatric/mental health nursing with the ability to advise and provide consultation within specialized nursing services (and nursing education). The Nurse Consultant spends majority of their work time performing independent functions as assigned by and under the general supervision of a Nurse Supervisor III.

Salary Range: $62044.00 - $102371.00

Recruitment Range: $80000.00 - $98557.00

*A Sign-on bonus of $10000 may be offered to the successful applicant(s) of this posting contingent on the 2025-2026 Budget Approval.

The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Basic knowledge of nursing principles and techniques for medical surgical and mental health practices.

  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of state and federal laws standards certifying and accrediting bodies guidelines and regulations applicable to area of assignment.

  • Working knowledge of adult learning principles and teaching techniques.

  • Working knowledge of performance improvement principles.

  • Ability to gather compile and perform preliminary analysis on data

Conditional Requirements:

  • ADA physical requirements will be discussed during the interview including but not limited to lifting kneeling walking up and down stairs and ability to lift 50 pounds.

  • Ability to maintain a current certification in NVCI annually; CPR and ACLS biennially.

This Position Is Exempt And Is EXEMPT From Certain Provisions Of The State Human Resources Act (GS 126)

This Position Is Designated As Mandatory And Must Report Or Stay Over During Adverse Weather Events.

This is a full-time position and eligible for the full State benefits package. Normal work hours are M-F 8:00am - 4:30pm. Flexibility is required to meet hospital needs.

*Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

To qualify for the Sign-on Bonus a newly hired permanent full-time or permanent part-time employee must work 30 to 40 hours per week to be eligible. Those who are eligible and working less than 40 hours a week will receive a prorated rate.


An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

  • The employee has held a position in the North Carolina State government including the judicial system or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date)

  • The employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency

  • DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
