The Chair and Medical Director is the physician leader for the growth and development of medical education research and clinical strategic planning throughout Carilion Clinic. The chair develops and manages the research program faculty development needs and strategic growth of clinical services within the department. He/she has a leadership role in creating strategic plans for the growth of regional clinical services. The chair develops community outreach activities and fosters community awareness and support for programs. The medical director actively supports and promotes patient safety continuous performance and quality improvement risk management and efficient resource utilization linked highly to evidence based medicine. Demonstrates responsiveness to the concerns and needs of physicians and fosters a close relationship between and among physicians management and clinical staff.
Performs specific job responsibilities:
- Develops implements and continuously evaluates strategic and tactical plans for the growth of services.
- Develops and manages community education and outreach programs which foster support and commitment for programs.
- Develops a research program. Creates plans for the incremental growth of research development of research expertise amongst faculty and residents and research collaboration with local universities and medical schools.
- Has ultimate responsibility for excellence in graduate medical education.
- Primary responsibility for the development and continuous management of budgets and financial performance targets for the department including all clinical research and education programs within the department.
- Has primary responsibility to establish implement and evaluate quality indicators quality improvement initiatives and excellence within department.
- Develops and implements effective clinical resource management processes across the Carilion Clinic as they relate to the department.
- Establishes strong working relationships and leadership with the medical staff.
- Supports financial performance improvement through work with the medical staff and employees in such areas as standardization of equipment and supplies optimal utilization of ancillary services cost-effective medical resource management and the application of evidence-based medicine.
- Oversees and participates in the review of patient care enabling committees to work with medical staff to monitor and continuously improve clinical performance. Supports the chiefs of service in their peer review related responsibilities.
- Stays abreast of industry trends; analyzes the healthcare industry environment its impact on the Medical Centers policies and operations and opportunities to anticipate and respond to those trends.
What We Require:
Education:MD or DO degree required.
Experience: Minimum of 10 years clinical experience and 5 years of progressive administrative/leadership experience. Established track record of excellence in clinical care medical education and research. Management training and degree desirable. Expertise in process improvement and data analysis and the use of information systems to develop and support outcome measurement and management desirable.
Licensurecertification and/or registration:Board certification in specific area depending on department.
Other MinimumQualifications: Established track record of accomplishments in activities particularly involving successful collaborative work with physicians. Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to measure performance and identify goals assemble and lead effective teams and achieve and maintain successful implementation. Experience in healthcare quality resource management and outcomes improvement and patient safety desirable. Can work with sophisticated information systems and their implementation in clinical settings. Well grounded in clinical medicine and an active life-long learner. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a high degree of self-awareness.
