Job Summary

General Responsibilities

Planscoordinates and supervisesinstallationmaintenance repairs and scheduled replacementsofthe department of School Nutritionsfoodserviceequipmentand cafeteria tables.Performs a variety of skilledmasterslevel tasks associated withthose tasks.Provides technical advice and productionassistancewhennecessary andinspects all major projects. Develops and refines the work routine of assigned personnel andcontractors. Carries assignmentsthrough tocompletion.

Work is performed underthe general supervisionof theSeniorCoordinatorofTradesandFacilities Managementin conjunction with the Senior Director of School Nutrition. Incumbentsare responsible forthe efficienttimely and economical accomplishment of work assigned to level I level IIand level III tradespersonnelclassifications and contractors.

Positionreflects themasters level of the Food Service Equipment Mechanic trades series.Supervisory and maintenance tasks are performedin the central kitchen andin school kitchensoperatedby the department of School Nutrition.Incumbent supervises the day-to-day operations of crews and contractors within established policies and guidelinesandis responsibleforthe efficienttimelyand economical accomplishment of assigned work and evaluation of staff.The individualassigned to this classification mayoccasionallybeto workevenings orbe on call evenings or weekends to respond to emergencies.

Education and Experience

Completion of high school including or supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship training and considerably and progressively more responsible experience in thetrade some of which shall have been at themasterslevel or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge skill and ability.Experience working in a large-scale commercial food service environment is preferred.

License/Certification

Possession ofan appropriate valid automotive vehicle operators licenseapproved and accepted by The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Manufacturer certifications to repair specific equipment as necessary;obtainsState of Virginia Type 60 Pesticide Applicator Certificateand FOG Certificationwithin six months afterhire.

Essential Job Functions

  • Plans distribution of work; assigns tasks or projects; explains work requirements and methods to subordinates as needed and keeps them informed on changes in policy and performance of contractors andassistsin the development oftrades relatedsystems for new buildings;inspectsnew buildings for discrepancies at walk through.

  • Reviews work in progress for compliance with departmental performance and safety standards andprovidesassistancewhen problems arise.
  • Usessoftware and/orweb-based toolsdailytoretrievesand prioritizeswork orders.

    Responds to emails generated by classified employees as well as administrators andtakesappropriate actionto resolve complaints.

  • Coordinates work with other affected shops asrequired;followsup to ensure that work is completed properly and in a reasonable amount of time.

  • Performsjourney or master level skilled trades tasks in the field to which assigned asrequired.

  • Makes cost estimates asrequired;identifiesneeds for new and replacement equipment; approvesorders for parts and materials; approves payment of invoices; assesses new vendors and products;maintainsand reports on staff time and attendance.

  • Entersrequisitions and receivers into MUNIS andreconcilescredit and resolves discrepancies in billing statements. Manages accounts payable to contractors and vendors.

  • Schedules andapprovesleave; takes informal and recommends formal corrective action on complaints conduct or performance problems; evaluates performance of subordinates; provides for training and cross-training of subordinates; initiatesrequestsfor tools parts and equipment; maintains records; participates in review and improvement of work methods; and participates in employee selection and promotion activities.

  • Coordinatesthe installation and repair of gas and electrickitchenappliancesand control devicesincludingkitchen hood systemsfoodtruck andSchool Nutritionsindoorhydroponic gardens.

  • Possesseshigh-levelknowledgeofcomplex integrated electricaland natural gas systemsin order to troubleshoot test repair calibrate maintain or modify commercial food service equipment including but not limited to electronic and electric controls gas steam and hot water plumbing valves thermostats steam assemblies electric motors switches wet wells conveyors air pressure chilled water conveyor high pressure hydraulic and ventilation systems.

  • Operates and maintains hand and power tools including volt ohm and amperage meters temperature and pressure gauges ohm meters soldering irons gas detectors taps and dies LP and plasma torches and arc welding equipment; ensures proper maintenance of tools and other equipment; ensures safety of the work area.

  • Drives a company vehicle to and from work locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials; requisitions parts and materials from vendors and supply houses; performs operator maintenance on vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition.

  • Responds to situations andwork inconditions where the potential for injury loss of life and damage to property is to emergency situations caused by vandalism materialfailuresand/or natural acts.

  • Performs related assignments as directed.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of methods and practicesused in commercial foodserviceand knowledge of local and national codes where applicable.

  • Ability to plan and performthework of thetrade at the full masters level; ability toobserve monitor train assign lead and make recommendationsconcerningsubordinates and contractors.

  • Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of outside contractors including the ability to prepare bid proposals; ability to perform well under emergency repair or changing work priority situations.

  • Ability toutilizediagrams blueprints schematicsmanufacturersmanualsmathematicalskillsandtechnologyto estimate time and materials needed.

  • Ability to carry out responsibilities within established policies plansproceduresand requirements and to coordinate work with other shops and departments.

  • Ability to enforce safety and other regulations where applicable.

  • Ability to estimate costs and necessary materialsofwork performed.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to keepaccuraterecords and prepare reports; ability tomaintaingood interpersonal relationships including successfultrainingcoachingand counseling of subordinates.

  • Proficient in use ofMicrosoft Office and/or Google Docs.

Physical Attributes

Work is performed inboth the officeandfield settingswith regular work sitevisits;routinelyinvolveliftingbendingand climbing.Requires strengthdexterity and endurancenecessary to perform all essential tasks.

Occasional or regular exposure to the common hazards of the assigned trade; incumbents must be aware of all potential hazards follow all safety procedures and utilize necessary protected clothing or devices.

Unusual Demands

Work may be performed both inside and outside school buildings under the demands of the assigned trade and may require working during unusual hours.
