Job Summary

Primary Purpose:

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual emotional physical and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual emotional physical and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained team departmental or itinerant capacity as assigned

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree from accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignment

Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned

Physical Education Teachers: Current automated external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate

Clear and valid Texas commercial drivers license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area

Knowledge of Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation

Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs

Effective communication skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures

Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules

Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes

Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical

Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Experience:

Student teaching approved internship or related work experience

3 years coaching or participant experience in sport assigned

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies

  1. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of districts curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual student differences.
  2. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials equipment and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency board policies and administrative regulations.
  3. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  4. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  5. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals objectives and methods according to district requirements.
  6. Plan and assign work to instructional aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion.Collaborate with students parents and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
  7. Implement an instructional therapeutic or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  8. Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  9. Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned
  10. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
  11. Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
  12. Participate in selection of books equipment and other instructional media.

Student Growth and Development

  1. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  2. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  3. Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.
  4. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  5. Provide or supervise personal care medical care and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
  6. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal.
  7. Consult district and outside resource people regarding education social medical and personal needs of students.

Classroom Management and Organization

  1. Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.
  2. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  4. Assist in selecting books equipment and other instructional materials.
  5. Compile maintain and file all reports records and other documents required.
  6. Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.

Communication

  1. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents students colleagues and community members.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  2. Comply with state district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  3. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Other

  1. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  2. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents students principals and teachers.
  3. Maintain professional relationships with parents students and colleagues.
  4. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  5. Keep informed of and comply with federal state district and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  6. Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required.
  7. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Athletic Program

  1. Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport assigned.
  2. Assist with the management and supervision of athletic activities contests and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills teamwork and good sportsmanship.
  3. Work with other members of school staff to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.
  4. Assist with the establishment of performance criteria for competition and evaluation of students athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis. Model performance criteria and physical movements required for successful student performance of sport.
  5. Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes equipment material and facilities.
  6. Assist with the coordination of travel arrangements to out-of-town events. (Drive bus to transport students to out-of-district competitions).
  7. Ensure compliance with all UIL rules.
  8. Assist with the development and coordination of a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make suggestions based on findings.
  9. Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports both at-home and on out-of-town trips.
  10. Instruct and advise students on National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
  11. Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests practice sessions and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  12. Encourage by example and through instruction sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
  13. Maintain open communication with parents students principals and teachers.
  14. Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  15. Assist with the compilation maintenance and filing of all reports records and other documents required.
  16. Assist with the process of cleaning repairing and storing all campus athletic equipment.
  17. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting; frequent driving; moderate grasping/squeezing wrist flexion/extension and reaching

Motion: Frequent walking and physical movements associated with sport(s) assigned

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment; occasional moderate lifting or carrying (15-44 pounds)

Environment: Work outside (exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather) and inside; frequent exposure to noise; frequent districtwide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; moderate exposure to vehicle fumes and work around moving vehicles

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
