SUMMARY
This is a Temporary Part-time (30hrs/week) There is 1 position available:
Applicants must be:
- Available to interview virtually via MS Teams Week of May 18-22 2026
- Available to attend Hospital orientation June 1-5 or July 6-10 including additional training days in June or July leading up to position start date
- Must be available to work Monday July 20 to August 14 2026.
- Available to work 30hrs/ week and willing to work flexible shifts.
The Independence Program is a residential immersive life skills program that assists youth with disabilities to develop the skills they need to participate in the adult world as they transition to post-secondary education employment or independent/supported living. Holland Bloorview has developed this opportunity to allow young people with disabilities to acquire life experiences that encourage self-expression skill-development and independence while promoting friendship and enjoyment. The program operates from a Toronto Student Residence (Seneca College Newnham Campus). It is an experience-based program that requires the staff to work with an inter-professional team and support participants in the achievement of their identified goals. This will require actively supporting program participants in workshops meal preparation community navigation and taking public transit. This position requires that staffs are able to work evenings and weekends.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of an Occupational Therapist the Occupational Therapy Assistant:
- Administers programs developed by the Occupational Therapist to individual clients or groups of clients such as feeding or dressing programs cognitive groups power wheelchair training etc.
- Fabricates adapts alters or repairs splints orthotics aids or assistive devices such as bathing and dressing aids hand splits or commode covers
- Assists clients with activities of daily living activities
- Assists in group work
- Assists in lifting and transferring clients as required
- Porters clients picks-up and delivers supplies equipment etc. as requested
- Assists with wheelchair and seating set-up and maintenance as required
- Regularly inspects treatment spaces for cleanliness safety and adequate supplies
- Maintains clean safe operational equipment and makes recommendations for new equipment based upon Centre needs
- Works with the Occupational Therapy Technician to conduct safety inspection of occupational therapy equipment and wheelchairs. Arranges for repairs/replacements as required
- Bases practice on established policies and procedures
- Documents on client charts as required
- Documents accurate workload statistics
- Participates on committees as requested
- Participates in quality management activities and supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment.
- Effectively communicates with clients and families members of the interdisciplinary team external agencies and vendors.
- In partnership with clients/families and the interdisciplinary team provides client and family-centred care which is goal directed evidence based and outcome oriented
- Supports and respects the client/familys rights to make decisions based on their own values beliefs and experiences
- Promotes and supports the physical psychosocial and spiritual well being of clients and families
- Collaborates with the client/family to plan implement and evaluate care
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Paediatric/youth experience preferred
- Graduate of a recognized Canadian community college OTA program
- Demonstrates ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrates ability to organize time manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities and meet deadlines
- Demonstrates ability to work independently under the guidance of the supervising Occupational Therapist
- Demonstrates initiative and self-direction regarding equipment maintenance safety and cleaning
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with clients families and members of the interdisciplinary care team
- The Independence Program experience in residential care setting
