Job Summary

Ophthalmic Technician-Glaucoma
Position Summary:
The Glaucoma Surgeon Technician supports glaucoma specialists in the evaluation treatment and surgical care of patients with glaucoma and related ocular diseases. This role includes advanced diagnostic testing surgical preparation intraoperative assistance and post-operative care with a strong focus on patient education disease monitoring and clinical accuracy.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Perform glaucoma-specific tests including:
    • Visual field testing (Humphrey Octopus)
    • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the optic nerve and retina
    • Tonometry (Goldmann iCare Tonopen)
    • Gonioscopy imaging (as applicable)
    • Fundus photography and pachymetry
  • Assist in intraocular pressure (IOP) monitoring and optic nerve assessments.
  • Prepare patients and operating room for glaucoma surgeries including:
    • Trabeculectomy
    • Tube shunt implantation (e.g. Ahmed Baerveldt)
    • MIGS procedures (iStent Hydrus Xen OMNI etc.)
    • Laser procedures (SLT ALT LPI CPC)
  • Maintain a sterile field prepare instruments and support surgeons during procedures.
  • Assist with patient positioning draping and postoperative bandaging.
  • Educate patients on glaucoma surgeries and medication regimens.
  • Administer pre- and post-op eye drops and perform minor procedures under supervision (e.g. suture removal bleb checks).
  • Document surgical history and assist with post-op evaluations and pressure checks.
  • Coordinate patient flow during glaucoma surgery and follow-up days.
  • Ensure accurate and complete EHR documentation of diagnostic findings and surgeon notes.
  • Communicate effectively with the surgical team anesthesiologists (if applicable) and schedulers.
  • Calibrate and maintain diagnostic and surgical equipment.
  • Ensure infection control and safety procedures are strictly followed in clinic and surgical settings.
  • Track inventory of glaucoma-specific surgical instruments and implants.

  • Can effectively communicate with patients and staff.
  • Can respond appropriately and effectively to common inquiries from patients.
  • Basic computer knowledge and the ability to learn new computer skills.
  • Requires strong communication skills excellent judgment and the ability to multitask.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Requires a good understanding of customer service standards and values of the practice.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma
  • COA certification a plus but not required; willingness to work towards certification over a period of time.
