GENERAL DESCRIPTION:This position serves as the Supervisor/Managing Attorney for the Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) field office in the First Judicial District with the primary office located in Cheyenne Laramie County. This role provides both advanced legal representation and strategic leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality defense services to indigent clients.
The Managing Attorney carries a demanding caseload that includes serious and violent felony matters representing clients at all stages of the criminal justice addition this position is responsible for supervising attorneys staff and contractors ensuring effective case management professional development and adherence to constitutional standards and agency policies.
This role requires regular travel throughout the district to support client representation and fulfill supervisory responsibilities. The Managing Attorney also plays a key role in recruitment efforts by building and maintaining relationships with the University of Wyoming College of Law and other talent pipelines.
Overall this position is critical to upholding the constitutional right to counsel while advancing the mission and operational excellence of the Office of the State Public Defender.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.- Supervise advise train and mentor attorneys staff and interns. Handle internal personnel and administrative issues resource management and case flow. Provide key input into the development of policies and procedures for office management.
- Manage a large field office to provide competent and compassionate legal representation to indigent clients while being a good steward of state resources and appropriately managing state employees and contractors.
- Initial meetings with clients. Provide education and explanations of the legal process review charges and maximum penalties and the clients rights.
- Meet and confer with prosecuting attorneys to discuss potential case resolutions possible plea agreements bond and hearings that are required in each case.
- Review evidence for potential motions to be filed and review evidence with clients to ensure they understand the evidence against them and in their favor.
- Meet with and direct the contract investigator in some cases.
- Legal research and draft motions.
- Client meetings and phone consultations.
- Court hearings and trials.
- Travel as needed.
- Assign cases appropriately given attorney caseloads case weights and the skill level of the attorneys in the office. Provide mentorship and act as a resource for attorneys so they can effectively work their cases and represent their clients.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference may be given to applicants who are active members of the Wyoming State Bar and licensed to practice as an attorney in this State.
**You must be licensed to practice law in Wyoming.
KNOWLEDGE:- Strong ability to manage multiple cases and attorneys prioritize tasks and oversee office operations.
- Extensive trial and hearing experience with expertise in rules of evidence and criminal statutes.
- Advanced knowledge of state federal and administrative criminal law.
- Skilled in case strategy personnel management and legal research.
- Ability to train and mentor attorneys ensuring excellence in client representation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:Juris DoctorateExperience:10 years of relevant legal experience; and 3 years of management experience
Certificates Licenses Registrations:Requires membership in the State Bar as an Attorney qualified to practice law in this state.Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:- Travel is required as necessary by the caseload.
