Job Summary

Are you passionate about creating safe and vibrant outdoor spaces for our community The City of Edmonton is looking for dedicated individuals to join our Infrastructure Operations team as a Labourer II - this role you will play a vital part in maintaining the heart of our parksthe playgrounds and gathering spaces where memories are made. By ensuring our equipment and furniture are safe clean and well-maintained you directly contribute to the quality of life for all Edmontonians. Reporting to a Licensed Crew Lead you will be responsible for the year-round maintenance and repair of playground equipment and park assets. This role ensures that all playspaces adhere to rigorous safety specifications including the Canadian Standards Association Z614 standards. Your daily work involves diagnosing safety tolerances repairing fixtures and maintaining various playground surfaces to ensure they remain functional and welcoming. You will operate a wide range of hand and power tools as well as specialized equipment like skid steers and tractors to complete seasonal maintenance tasks. This position is perfect for someone who enjoys manual work problem-solving and working outdoors in a variety of conditions. What will you do

  • Perform semi-skilled manual labour to inspect repair and maintain playground equipment and park furniture
  • Diagnose safety tolerances and identify necessary repairs to ensure assets meet safety standards
  • Operate and maintain various tools and equipment including trucks skid steers trailers and power saws
  • Conduct sanitation duties such as litter and debris pick-up to keep our parklands clean
  • Complete inspection reports accident reports and inventory records accurately
  • Collaborate with crew members and provide exceptional service when interacting with people in our parks
  • Perform seasonal tasks such as snow removal as required by operational needs
  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • One (1) year of experience in parks construction maintenance and operations

Assets:

  • Skid Steer Certification
  • Class 3 Drivers license
  • Canadian Playground Safety Institute (CPSI) certification (or the ability to obtain it within 12 months of employment)

Skills required for success:

  • Proficiency in operating a wide range of vehicles shop tools and specialized equipment like skid steers and tractors
  • Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot specific types of playground equipment and determine repair needs
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision while following strict safety guidelines
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting professionally with community members school board staff and collaborators
  • Ability to mentor and train other crew members in functional tasks
  • Inspects park furniture and performs maintenance and repair of park furniture and fixtures when necessary
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret technical design and construction guidelines to ensure asset compliance
  • Familiarity with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety practices specific to park operations
  • Ensuring all City OH&S Safety Standards Policies and Procedures are implemented enforced and followed; and that safety is the first priority in work execution
  • Accurate time sheet entry
  • Basic computer skills (email data entry Google suite)
  • Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( a culture of equity diversity reconciliation and inclusion

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator and compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment including medical monitoring is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel-toe boots gloves goggles sunscreen and coveralls
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
  • The work occurs primarily outdoors with exposure to environmental conditions including extreme temperatures inclement weather dust poor air quality noise light variation vibrations chemicals animals and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards
  • Potential exposure to occupational hazards such as biohazards (bodily fluids needles) chemicals and aggressive domestic or wild animals
  • This role requires completion of heavy effort including repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing walking kneeling bending stooping crouching lifting items up to 100 pounds pushing pulling reaching and using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
  • Placement will be based on operational need city-wide

Salary Range: $25.935 - $34.208 (Hourly); $54152.280 - $71426.300 (Annually)
