UNSWs Education Focussed (EF) roles enable academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality teaching and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students. Those who are appointed to this prestigious specialisation drive educational excellence within the universitys teaching and learning communities.

The School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 150 academic research and professional staff. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science Environmental Science Physical Geography Climate Science Evolutionary Biology Ecology and Marine Science.

The School is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Level B) to conduct high quality teaching in interdisciplinary skills-focused science courses particularly the subjects SCIF1000 Level 1 Capstone and SCIF1001 Level 1 Research Skills. The School is interested in an appointment that can teach within the broad fields of the biological sciences but specific fields of teaching expertise might include:

  • The principles and practices of scientific inquiry including hypothesis development experimental design and evidence-based reasoning;
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to addressing complex real-world scientific challenges (e.g. climate change public health emerging technologies);
  • Research methodologies data analysis and interpretation within collaborative project-based environments;
  • The role of science in society including ethical considerations societal impacts and communication of scientific ideas to diverse audiences.

About the role

  • Level B ($127k - $150k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term (to 31 December 2026)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning;
  • Conduct classes assess student learning achievements and support students in postgraduate and undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy;
  • Design and develop learning activities and resources and assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments;
  • Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation advice on Educational Learning Plans (ELPs) and inclusive teaching practices aligned with Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) principles) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students;
  • Support course administration including academic quality assurance;
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others;
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in a science discipline and/or relevant work experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level;
  • Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence;
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills;
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity diversity and inclusion initiatives;
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSWs aims objectives and values in action together with relevant policies and guidelines;
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
