Grounded in the Frederick County Effective Schools Framework the role of the school Dean is pivotal in upholding our core pillarsensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all students and fostering a high impact instructional culture where a conducive learning environment is foundational.
The Elementary School Dean of Students is a key leadership position responsible for fostering a positive safe and supportive school climate that promotes student well-being character development and academic success. The Dean of Students works collaboratively with the principal assistant principal counselors teachers and parents to address student behavior attendance discipline and social-emotional learning. This role plays a vital part in creating an elementary school environment where all students feel valued respected and empowered to reach their full addition this position is designed to benefit from hands-on administrative experience and key decision making in preparation for future leadership opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Hold or be eligible for a Virginia license with endorsement in elementary education PK-6 as well as hold an endorsement in Administration and Supervision or have fulfilled all coursework and testing requirements for such endorsement.
- Must have 3 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher. Preference given to those with elementary experience.
- Leadership qualities and skill in presenting to and working with both licensed and classified colleagues.
- Continuous and recent professional learning directly related to the content area methodology and Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Ability to plan and implement instructional programs as appropriate to meet individual needs.
- Ability to make formal and informal assessments of student outcomes and prepare reports.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Training in social-emotional learning (SEL) and trauma-informed practices.
- Experience with student information systems and data management.
Essential Duties:
Essential duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature. Other duties may be assigned.
- Student Conduct and Discipline:
- Administer and enforce the schools code of conduct and disciplinary procedures in a fair consistent and restorative manner.
- Investigate student disciplinary incidents determine appropriate consequences and maintain accurate records.
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding disciplinary matters and collaborate on solutions.
- Work collaboratively with the administrative team to develop and implement strategies to proactively address and prevent behavioral issues.
- Serve as a point of contact for students experiencing behavioral challenges.
- Collaborate with school counselors social workers and other support staff to address students social emotional and behavioral needs.
- Develop and implement programs and initiatives that promote positive school climate character development and social-emotional learning.
- Serve as a resource for students facing personal challenges and connect them with appropriate support services.
- Monitor student attendance and implement interventions for students with chronic absenteeism.
- Support the implementation of anti-bullying and harassment prevention programs.
- Participate in crisis intervention and management as needed.
- Work collaboratively with the administrative team to cultivate a positive and inclusive school culture.
- Promote student leadership opportunities and student voice within the school.
- Supervise student activities clubs and events to ensure a safe and positive environment.
- Serve as a visible and approachable presence in hallways classrooms and common areas.
- Foster positive relationships with students staff and parents.
- Maintain open and effective communication with students parents/guardians and staff regarding student behavior attendance and well-being.
- Collaborate with teachers to develop classroom management strategies and support individual student needs.
- Participate in school-based team meetings such as Student Support Teams (SSTs) and IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings as needed.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and families on matters related to student conduct and support.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records related to discipline attendance and interventions.
- Prepare reports on student behavior trends and outcomes.
- Assist with the development and revision of school policies and procedures related to student conduct.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices in student management and social-emotional learning.
- Actively engage in leadership development by rotating through diverse administrative tasks across the school and division.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Assistant Principal.
Pay Rate:
Teacher Salary Scale (credit is based on years of full-time experience in a related position)
Contract:
Full time / 12 months /245 days
Start Date:
This position is effectivewiththe2026-2027 school year.
