Job Summary

JOB TITLE: FIRE SCIENCE PROGRAM DIRECTOR DEPARTMENT: TECHNICAL EDUCATION

SALARY RANGE: FACULTY SALARY CLASSIFICATION CHART FLSA: EXEMPT

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Dean of Technical Education

SCHEDULE DETAILS: Full-time/10 month position/PSRS

Position Summary

The Program Director is responsible for the instruction of assigned classes and normal duties of a full-time instructor. This position will also provide leadership support motivation and accountability for the daily operations of the Fire Science Technology (FST) Program. The Program Director will assist the Dean of Technical Education with the overall functions of the Technical Education division. This position is responsible for six credit hours of instruction per fall and spring semester. The Program Director is allowed to teach two classes for overload per semester. Over two classes for overload is extremely rare and requires approval of Dean and Provost.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide leadership and facilitate continuous improvement of instruction for the department through collaboration promotion and support of innovative teaching and classroom creativity.
  • Assist the Dean Online and campus/center Deans with the screening and hiring of full-time faculty.
  • Lead the department efforts in assessment of student learning and annual planning.
  • Coordinate faculty decision making with regard to curriculum development.
  • Recruit interview and hire adjunct faculty for assigned department(s) on the Springfield campus subject to the approval of the Dean. Support the hiring process in collaboration with campus and center Deans for other OTC locations.
  • Address student concerns regarding advisement placement course difficulties and instructor conflicts.
  • Develop the course schedule and assignment of instructors for assigned department(s) with the Deans approval.
  • Collaborate with OTC Online and other campuses and centers to schedule staff and evaluate classes and faculty.
  • Monitor performance and complete evaluations for assigned faculty (e.g. full-time adjunct and dual-credit).
  • Instruct assigned classes every fall and spring semester. Assist/substitute in instruction as assigned.
  • Demonstrate exemplary instruction including mastery of the material and the utilization of effective and creative teaching techniques.
  • Facilitate the textbook adoption process with faculty.
  • Provide input in the preparation of program budget and manage department budget in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Coordinate department reports and records (e.g. course syllabi program reviews student metrics and inventory).
  • Serve as department liaison to college committees and special project teams.
  • Promote classes and degrees facilitate student recruitment and serve as departmental advocate.
  • Provide leadership to departmental faculty by hosting a minimum of three departmental meetings per semester and responding to emails within 48 hours.
  • Assist the Dean with program accreditation and regulation requirements.
  • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
  • Comply with college policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including attending college functions serving on committees and attending community events.

Non-Essential Job Duties

  • Provide input to the Dean in evaluation of courses for transfer and articulation discussions with other institutions.
  • Arrange for substitute instructors when needed.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  • IFSAC Certified Fire Instructor II (or ability to complete within 6 months).
  • IFSAC Certified Firefighter 1 & 2.
  • IFSAC Certified Fire Officer I (or ability to complete within 6 months).
  • IFSAC Certified Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations (or ability to complete within 6 months).
  • Ten years of employment experience in the fire service or related occupation.
  • Valid Missouri teaching certificate with the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (or be willing to obtain current teaching certificate in secondary education from the State of Missouri at the applicants expense).
  • Three years of teaching experience in discipline.
  • MO Division Fire Safety Evaluator Certification (or ability to complete within 6 months).
  • Demonstrate current knowledge in course content and effectiveness in teaching assigned subjects.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively with business and industry.
  • Demonstrate leadership and/or management skills.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as Microsoft Office Suite).

Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Masters degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Teaching experience in the career and technical education field.
  • Five years of teaching experience in fire science or fire training.
  • Three years of progressive incident supervision responsibility in the fire service.
  • Three years of supervisory experience.
  • MO Division of Fire Safety Fire Service Driver/Operator Certification.
  • Knowledge of Emergency Medical Services (1st Responder EMT-B).
  • Knowledge of fire service specialty areas (Technical Rescue Fire Prevention etc.).
  • Industry recognized credential in the program field of study.
  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (such as Canvas).
  • Experience with Colleague.
  • Experience working within a collegiate setting.

Environment:Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions. Requires extended periods of time viewing computer monitor or standing; may require adjustment of schedule to include some evening and/or weekends; may encounter occasional exposure to inclement weather during travel.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to lift carry push and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
