Job Summary

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Kentucky certificate license or other legal credentials required.

2. Minimum of Masters Degree with a Reading Specialist Endorsement or equivalent university training in early literacy.

3. Reading Recovery Trained or willing to be trained.

REPORTS TO:

Principal

SUPERVISES:

Works as a resource person to principals teachers and classified instructional staff.

JOB GOAL:

The literacyspecialistsrole is to support and guide teachers teachers and the school as they establish research-based literacy instruction and implement change in literacy instruction.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.0 Instructional Process

1.1 Assists with curriculum development.

1.2 Assists with scope and sequence of program of study and plans for continuity to support literacy in the primary grades. 1.3 Helps set priorities for program implementation.

1.4 Examines evaluates and recommends instructional methods material and equipment including technology.

2.0 Instructional Leadership/Program Support

2.1 Provide job embedded professional development through assignment in a host classroom(s) for literacy instruction

2.2 Provide additional literacy PD for primary staff as needed for framework implementation (maximum 20 hours/year)

2.3 Model lessons for teachers related to literacy

2.4 Work collaboratively with teachers in implementing the components of the literacy framework (planning problem solving reflection etc.)

2.5 Facilitate the development and implementation of a school-wide literacy team

2.6 Maintain bookroom/resources for use in guided reading groups and other literacy strategies

2.7 Support on-going literacy assessment and analysis of data to guide instructional decisions

2.8 Work with identified at-risk readers

2.9 Train support staff in literacy strategies for at-risk readers

2.10 Establish a trained literacy volunteer program for the school

2.11 Build partnerships with parents (training etc.) to support literacy at home.

3.0 Interpersonal Relationships

3.1 Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with students.

3.2 Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with staff.

3.3 Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with other administrators.

3.4 Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with parents/community.

4.2 Participates in professional development activities to continually upgrade skills.

4.3 Adheres to school board policies and administrative procedures

4.4 Adheres to the state Professional Code of Ethics

4.5 Develops and implements KERA activities that are designed to carry out the goals of the school.
