TITLE: Dean of Students Middle School

Reports to: Building Principal

Job Goals:

The Dean of Students supports the Building Principal and Assistant Principal in creating a safe inclusive and engaging school environment where all students are supported academically socially emotionally and behaviorally. This position provides leadership in student behavior systems attendance student engagement family communication and schoolwide interventions.

The Dean of Students works closely with teachers support staff families and administrators to identify student needs develop behavior supports strengthen family partnerships and assist with the General Education Intervention process for students with behavioral concerns. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to build positive relationships with students and families support consistent schoolwide behavior expectations and help close opportunity gaps for traditionally underserved students.

Qualifications:

  • Current Kansas Building Level Leadership licensure preferred; will consider applicant who will complete licensure within two years
  • Current Kansas teaching licensure
  • Masters Degree preferred
  • Minimum 35 years successful experience as a classroom teacher
  • Successful experience communicating with parents guardians and students
  • Demonstrated effective outcomes with student discipline and behavior support
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Performance and Responsibilities:

Student Behavior and School Climate

  • Supports the development and implementation of schoolwide behavior expectations systems and procedures that promote a safe respectful and positive learning environment.
  • Works with students staff and families to address behavior concerns through restorative supportive and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Assists with student discipline in a manner that is consistent equitable and aligned with district policies and building expectations.
  • Monitors student behavior data to identify patterns respond to student needs and support proactive interventions.
  • Works with teachers to develop and implement behavior strategies and classroom supports for students experiencing behavioral challenges.
  • Supports staff in strengthening classroom management practices and creating engaging learning environments.
  • Responds to student behavior incidents in a timely manner and helps ensure appropriate follow-up documentation and communication.

Student Engagement and Attendance

  • Monitors student attendance engagement and behavior data to identify students who may need additional support.
  • Works collaboratively with school staff to develop strategies that increase student belonging participation and connection to school.
  • Builds positive relationships with students and serves as a trusted adult who supports student success.
  • Supports student re-engagement efforts for students who are frequently absent disengaged or experiencing behavioral concerns.
  • Collaborates with counselors social workers teachers and administrators to connect students with appropriate academic social-emotional and behavioral supports.

Family Engagement and Communication

  • Communicates regularly and respectfully with families regarding student behavior attendance engagement and intervention supports.
  • Partners with families to better understand student needs and develop supportive plans that promote student success.
  • Responds in a timely and professional manner to parent and guardian questions concerns and requests.
  • Helps strengthen family-school partnerships by ensuring families are included in problem-solving and intervention planning.
  • Supports transparent communication between school staff and families when behavior or engagement concerns arise.

GEI and Behavior Intervention Support

  • Assists with the General Education Intervention process for students with behavioral concerns.
  • Collaborates with teachers intervention teams counselors social workers special education staff and administrators to identify student needs and develop appropriate behavior interventions.
  • Helps collect review and monitor behavior data connected to intervention plans.
  • Supports the implementation and follow-up of behavior intervention strategies within the general education setting.
  • Participates in problem-solving meetings to ensure students receive timely and appropriate support before concerns escalate.
  • Supports connections between GEI MTSS attendance behavior and social-emotional supports.

Collaboration and Leadership

  • Collaborates with the building principal and assistant principal to implement a comprehensive tiered support system addressing academic behavioral social and emotional needs.
  • Supports and participates in IEP and student support processes as appropriate to help ensure students receive needed services and behavioral supports.
  • Facilitates or supports professional learning for staff related to behavior student engagement classroom management and family communication.
  • Serves as administrator in charge during the absence of the principal and/or assistant principal.
  • Supports extracurricular activities and school events as assigned by the principal.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Principal Superintendent or Superintendents designee for the purpose of contributing to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the educational leadership role.

  • Demonstrates a positive attitude toward the education profession and maintains positive relationships with district employees

Length of Contract:

Certified contract with 10 additional days
