Albemarle County is seeking an experienced full-time HR Generalist to support the Countys HR day-to-day operations. This role will handle a range of HR functions including but not limited to employee relations leave management recruitment and employee experience. The HR Generalist serves as a central point of contact representing a portfolio of County government departments.

Job Summary:

The Human Resources Generalist performs professional duties in support of an effective human resources program. This position advises departments on HR functions including but not limited to recruitment/selection onboarding performance management benefit offerings employee relations regulatory requirements FMLA & ADA administration and pay changes. Work is performed under the general supervision of the HR Operations Manager.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists assigned departments with strategic planning staffing organizational changes process improvements and other personnel-related initiatives.
  • Provides guidance on practices procedures and work rules for employees supervisors and applicants to ensure compliance with Federal and State laws and organizational policies.
  • Responsible for recruitment selection and onboarding processes for assigned departments.
  • Processes employee personnel changes in HRIS as needed.
  • Responsible for responding to employee inquiries regarding FMLA FLSA Title VII ADA County policies general pay procedures and benefits questions.
  • Provides recommendations for programs policies practices and processes associated with meeting the strategic and operational goals of the HR department.
  • Provides oversight for performance management and development programs for assigned departments.
  • Conducts complaint investigations as required.
  • Produces statistical reports develops presentations and creates professional documents and templates as required.
  • Participates in cross-functional teams as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources Management Business Administration or Public Administration or a closely related field plus two years of HR experience in a Generalist or similar role. Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered with two years of related experience accepted in lieu of each year of required education.

Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:

  • Masters Degree in Business Administration Management Human Resources or Public Administration.
  • Experience working in local or state government.
  • Experience in marketing or recruiting.
  • Three plus (3) years of Human Resources experience to include HRIS platforms.
  • Professional human resources certification issued by IPMA-HR HRCI or SHRM.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job the employee will be regularly required to:

  • Frequently sit talk and hear use hands to type file or handle.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop kneel crouch or crawl.
  • Visual acuity to use a keyboard prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
  • Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.
  • The employee will need to be able to operate a motor vehicle and will be required to occasionally travel from office to other county buildings and department facilities.

Working Environment:

Collaborative and team-oriented work environment. Work is typically performed in an office setting with a combination of desk work meetings and employee-facing interactions throughout the day.

Remote Work:

This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work in compliance with personnel policy P-24 Remote Work and Alternate Schedules. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia however it is the expectation that employees in this role will able to work onsite for a minimum of two (2) days per week in office to ensure appropriate coverage. Please note that additional in-office days may occasionally be required based on business needs.

The Salary Range:

The hiring range for this position is approx. $78627.00 - $86903.00 per year. Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays paid vacation and sick leave health insurance options with employer contribution employer-paid life insurance VRS retirement and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time FLSA exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy P-60.
