STEM Teacher (K8) Job Description

Department: Catholic Schools
Supervisor: Principal

Purpose and Scope

Under the general supervision of the principal the STEM Teacher strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education while delivering high-quality instruction in science technology engineering and mathematics. The teacher assumes responsibility for leadership in the classroom; works collaboratively as a member of the school faculty; develops an engaging inquiry-based learning environment; evaluates the needs of each student; integrates faith and reason; monitors and reports student progress; builds positive relationships within the school community; participates in ongoing professional development; and performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

Strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education

  • Demonstrates understanding and support of the Catholic philosophy of education.
  • Integrates Gospel values and Catholic moral teachings into STEM instruction.
  • Upholds the doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Models Christian behavior and values in all interactions.

Assumes responsibility for the leadership of assigned classes

  • Demonstrates knowledge of STEM content instructional strategies and child development across K8 grade levels.
  • Designs and delivers engaging standards-based STEM lessons that promote critical thinking creativity and problem-solving.
  • Establishes clear learning objectives aligned with diocesan and state academic standards.
  • Incorporates project-based learning hands-on experimentation and technology integration.
  • Develops implements and reflects on lesson plans regularly.
  • Maintains a structured organized and productive classroom environment.
  • Serves as a positive role model for students.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and sound judgment in daily instruction and classroom management.

Works as a member of the school team

  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to integrate STEM across the curriculum.
  • Attends faculty meetings professional development sessions and diocesan trainings.
  • Participates in school events parent activities and community outreach.
  • Maintains professionalism and effective communication with colleagues students and families.

Develops an appropriate learning and social environment

  • Creates a safe inclusive and faith-centered classroom environment.
  • Designs a classroom that supports collaboration innovation and exploration.
  • Promotes responsible use of technology and digital citizenship.
  • Ensures student safety and well-being at all times.

Evaluates the needs of each student

  • Assesses student understanding through formal and informal methods.
  • Differentiates instruction to meet diverse learning needs and abilities.
  • Supports students with varying levels of readiness and learning styles.
  • Refers students with academic or developmental concerns to appropriate support personnel.

Assists in the development and supervision of all areas

  • Works with administration and staff to enhance STEM programming and resources.
  • Selects and maintains appropriate instructional materials and technology.
  • Ensures classroom equipment and lab spaces are safe and properly used.

Evaluates and reports student progress

  • Maintains accurate and timely records of student achievement.
  • Communicates student progress regularly to parents and administration.
  • Conducts conferences with parents/guardians as needed.

Establishes positive school community relationships

  • Builds strong partnerships with parents and families.
  • Promotes school programs including STEM initiatives and events (e.g. science fairs robotics clubs).
  • Demonstrates awareness of the teachers role as a representative of Catholic education.

Continues professional development

  • Stays current with STEM education trends technology tools and instructional practices.
  • Participates in professional learning communities and educational organizations.
  • Attends diocesan in-services workshops and faculty meetings.
  • Pursues ongoing faith formation and spiritual development.

Performs other duties as assigned

  • Completes additional responsibilities as directed by the principal.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of STEM curriculum instructional technology and inquiry-based learning.
  • Ability to integrate faith with academic content.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to adapt instruction to meet diverse student needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in education STEM field or related area (required).
  • Valid teaching certification (preferred/required per diocesan policy).
  • Experience teaching or working with children in K8 settings.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred; willingness to support Catholic mission required.
  • Completion of Safe Environment Training and signing of Code of Ethics.
  • FBI Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Compliance with diocesan and state educational requirements.
