Job Summary
George Fox Universitys Theatre Department is seeking a collaborative and experienced scenic carpenter who has excellent communication and management skills to serve as our Scene Shop Manager.
About the Job:
The Performing Arts Scene Shop Manager will serve as lead carpenter in the scene shop providing skilled oversight to a crew of student carpenters in the construction of scenic elements for all theatre productions and the annual Christmas concert. This role includes participating in the production planning process for all productions as it pertains to scenery which includes meetings and technical rehearsals.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring accurate and timely construction and painting of 2-3 main-stage theatre productions per year and the annual Christmas Concert.
- Hiring training scheduling and supervising a crew of 10-14 student employees in the scene shop.
- Generating accurate construction drawings as needed based on designs provided by the Scenic Designer.
- Maintaining the scene shop tools supplies and all inventory.
- Fostering a culture of safety and ensuring safe work environments and practices are observed.
- Establishing and attending scene shop hours work sessions technical rehearsals and dress rehearsals.
- Assisting in purchasing and procurement of scenic materials supplies and hardware.
- Assisting the Technical Director depending on skills and experience in determining construction methods and materials and solving technical challenges for productions.
- Contributing to the overall success of George Fox University and the Performing Arts Department by performing any additional duties and responsibilities assigned.
- Communicating effectively and courteously with others including employees students and the public in a spirit of teamwork respect and customer service.
- By actions words and lifestyle be a Christian role model to students whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.

A day in the life of this position:
Our scene shop manager will typically work 30 hours per addition to working during the day this position requires some evening and weekend work particularly during rehearsals and leading up to performances four times per year. This individual will plan craft and lead students to set the stage for our main-stage productions including teaching students how to safely use tools and equipment. They will work closely with the professor of theatre design who will be their supervisor as well as the resident scenic designer and technical addition they will be an integral member of the theatre team which includes two faculty one in design/tech and one in acting/directing a staff Production Manager and Lighting Designer a staff Costume Studio Manager and a staff Performing Arts Program Coordinator.
Were looking for candidates who have:
- A minimum of three (3) years of scenic construction experience at the collegiate or professional level.
- Demonstrated excellence in scenic carpentry.
- Comprehensive knowledge of shop equipment and rigging equipment as well as experience using and teaching others to use theatre tools and equipment.
- The ability to read and interpret to-scale ground plans construction drawings elevations and related documents.
- Familiarity with emergency procedures and protocols along with a working knowledge of first aid and CPR.
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on a team.
- The ability to work closely with students of varying construction skill levels and a desire to assist students with the proper use of construction equipment.
- The ability to organize prioritize multitask and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail.
- The ability to clearly outline and oversee all steps of the building process with student workers in mind.
- A commitment to collaboration with a spirit of servant storytelling.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to speak to coworkers guest artists managers and students with good judgment kindness and clarity.

- Bachelors degree in Theatre or related field with an emphasis in technical theatre
- Proficiency in Vectorworks or AutoCAD
