Position Summary
The Exceptional Childrens (EC) Teacher provides specialized instruction to students with disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) North Carolina Policies Governing Services for Children with Disabilities and the NC Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS). The teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) supports access to the general education curriculum and promotes academic social and behavioral growth in a least restrictive environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop implement and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with IDEA and NCDPI policies
- Provide specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities
- Deliver instruction aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS) and adapt curriculum as needed
- Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of exceptionalities and learning needs
- Collect analyze and maintain data on student progress toward IEP goals
- Use data to inform instruction and make educational decisions
- Implement and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and support positive behavioral strategies
- Provide a structured supportive and inclusive learning environment
- Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and access to the general curriculum
- Work closely with related service providers (e.g. speech occupational therapy physical therapy school psychologists)
- Participate in and facilitate IEP meetings including annual reviews and reevaluations
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress services and supports
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal timelines documentation and procedural safeguards
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with FERPA and IDEA
- Utilize assistive technology and accommodations/modifications as required
- Support students in developing independence self-advocacy and life skills
- Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and ongoing professional development
- Stay current with best practices in special education and legal requirements
- Follow all Macon County Schools policies procedures and expectations
- Demonstrate professionalism ethical conduct and a commitment to equity and inclusion
- Perform other duties as assigned by school administration
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of IDEA NCDPI EC policies and special education procedures
- Understanding of various exceptionalities (e.g. learning disabilities autism intellectual disabilities emotional/behavioral disabilities)
- Ability to design and implement specially designed instruction
- Strong data collection and progress monitoring skills
- Effective classroom management and behavior support strategies
- Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
Physical Requirements
- Light to medium work classification (may vary by assignment)
- Ability to stand walk and move throughout classroom and school environments
- Ability to assist students with mobility and personal care needs as required
- Occasional lifting of students or equipment (up to 2550 pounds depending on assignment)
Evaluation
- Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the North Carolina Educator Effectiveness System (NCEES) and Macon County Schools evaluation procedures
Terms of Employment
- Full-time 10-month position
- Salary based on the North Carolina State Salary Schedule with applicable local supplement
- Work calendar determined by the district
