Job Summary

The City of Port Coquitlam has an exciting opportunity in the Public Works Department for a Solid Waste Operator. The Solid Waste Operator safely and efficiently operates equipment designed to collect and transport residential and commercial solid waste. They also sort residential waste and perform minor equipment servicing washing and other related duties efficiently with minimal supervision.

Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
Operates a solid waste automated truck through designated routes utilizing mechanized lifting arm to collect dump and return carts to the curb side.

  • Responds to questions and/or concerns as required including regarding the Citys set out and set back service.
  • Travels to and from collection zones; loads transports; and unloads materials to designated transfer stations or facilities.
  • Performs required pre-trip and post-trip inspections minor servicing maintenance and washing as required.
  • Prepares maintains and updates records related the work including quantities weights and materials as directed.
  • Performs related work as required.

The successful candidate for this position will have:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by considerable experience in the operation of heavy-duty trucks and maintenance of vehicles or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Drivers License for the Province of British Columbia - Class 3 with Air Endorsement
  • Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to the safe operation of tandem axle automated solid waste trucks and related devices.
  • Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to the licensing requirements related to the operation of a large-sized vehicle.
  • Working knowledge of the methods and materials required in servicing for the purpose of pre-inspection and post-inspection of vehicles including minor repairs and adjustments.
  • Sound knowledge in the performance of related safety operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of the operation of diesel and gasoline powered equipment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out effectively oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain records related to the work performed.
  • Ability to work courteously and cooperatively with the general public co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to relay public and operational problems concerns and requests to a supervisor for direction
