The City of Port Coquitlam is looking for an energetic individual to join our Recreation Active Living and Sport Team as a Recreation Specialist. This is a technical position with supervisory responsibilities reporting to a Coordinator in the Recreation Department. The incumbent of this specialized role is required to maintain qualifications and certifications specific to the area of assignment. Individuals in the role are key resources who assist and provide specialized and technical guidance to the Coordinator and/or Manager overseeing the functional area. The Recreation Specialist ensures that industry standards are adhered to with respect to program and service quality operating policies and producers and staff hiring and training requirements and safety protocols. The Recreation Specialist may also provide direct service including leading activities and programs as required. This position is expected to exercise initiative and judgement within departmental policies and consult a supervisor when unusual or difficult matters arise. Work performance is reviewed by a superior in terms of efficiency quality and effectiveness of services provided.
The successful candidate will be required to work a minimum of one (1) evening a week until 10:00 pm and the possibility to work weekends.
Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
- Develop and implements programs in alignment with industry best practices and in response to community needs and interests
- Leads program evaluations supervises staff and instructors reviews existing and provides input for new program delivery
- Provides direct service including leading activities and programs as required
- Ensures for proper orientation training and on the job coaching to staff in order to meet required safety standards
- Supervises functional area within building
The successful candidate for this position will have:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Recreation;
- Three to five years of experience in the area that includes experience supervising staff; and
- Certified Sport for life Physical Literacy Instructor High Five Trainer NCCP certified and Standard first aid and CPR-C.
