The 5th6th Grade Teacher provides standards-based instruction to upper elementary and early middle grades students in alignment with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS). The teacher supports the transition from elementary to middle grades by fostering academic growth independence and organizational skills while promoting social-emotional development and college and career readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and deliver instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS) in core content areas (ELA Mathematics Science and Social Studies as assigned)
Support students in developing foundational and intermediate skills in literacy numeracy and content-area learning
Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to engage learners and promote critical thinking and problem-solving
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners including Exceptional Children (EC) English learners (EL) and academically gifted students
Support students in developing organizational study and independent learning skills appropriate for upper elementary and middle grades transition
Reinforce expectations for increased responsibility and academic accountability
Assess student learning using formative and summative methods and use data to guide instruction
Maintain accurate records of student performance grades and assessments
Create and maintain a safe structured and engaging classroom environment that promotes positive behavior and student engagement
Establish clear expectations routines and classroom management practices
Integrate instructional technology and digital tools to enhance learning and support digital literacy
Promote collaboration communication and problem-solving skills
Collaborate with grade-level teams departmental staff (if applicable) and support personnel to improve student outcomes
Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and data-driven decision-making
Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress behavior and academic needs
Participate in conferences school events and transition-related activities
Support students social-emotional development and adjustment to increased academic expectations
Implement school-wide initiatives such as MTSS PBIS or transition supports
Participate in required professional development meetings and school activities
Follow all Macon County Schools policies procedures and expectations
Demonstrate professionalism ethical conduct and a commitment to continuous improvement
Perform other duties as assigned by school administration
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of upper elementary and middle grades curriculum and instructional practices
Understanding of child development particularly for pre-adolescent learners (ages 1012)
Ability to support student transition to increased academic rigor and independence
Strong classroom management and organizational skills
Ability to analyze and use student data to guide instruction
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to build positive relationships with students families and staff
Proficiency in instructional technology and digital tools
Physical Requirements
Light to medium work classification
Ability to stand walk and actively engage with students throughout the day
Occasional lifting of instructional materials (up to 25 pounds)
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the North Carolina Educator Effectiveness System (NCEES) and Macon County Schools evaluation procedures
Terms of Employment
Full-time 10-month position
Salary based on the North Carolina State Salary Schedule with applicable local supplement
Work calendar determined by the district
