Job Summary

Description

If you are building your career in optimization with focus on robustness and stochastic modelling and want to be at the frontier of one of the defining decarbonization challenges of our time the shift to battery-electric freight transport this is your opportunity.

At DTU Managements Transport Division you will join the TEDDY project and develop the next generation of stochastic optimization methods for planning the transition from diesel to battery-electric trucks. You will work directly with Professor Jeppe Rich and Professor Allan Larsen two leading researchers in the field and contribute original work to an area where deterministic models are no longer sufficient.

We are looking for a researcher with a strong background in mathematical optimization stochastic programming mixed-integer programming or probabilistic methods who wants to apply these tools to one of the most complex and consequential fleet-planning problems of our time.

Responsibilities
Your overall focus will be to develop stochastic and probabilistic optimization models that help fleet operators and policy makers plan the transition from diesel to battery-electric trucks under uncertainty. You will work with nearby colleagues and with academic and industrial partners in Denmark and abroad. Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Develop mathematical models for fleet replacement charging investment and vehicle technology choice under uncertainty
  • Design and implement stochastic programming and simulation-based computational methods
  • Quantify cost emission and service-risk trade-offs across uncertain transition scenarios
  • Analyse where charging infrastructure becomes binding for line-haul logistics networks
  • Translate optimization outputs into transparent decision rules for operators and policy makers
  • Publish results in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Present findings at international conferences and contribute to ongoing project reporting

Qualifications
You hold a PhD degree in Operations Research Applied Mathematics Computer Science Transportation Modelling or a closely related field. You have a strong background in mathematical optimization preferably mixed-integer programming stochastic programming or decomposition methods and solid scientific programming skills in Python Julia C or similar. You are able to write clearly and publish in English.

Experience with Sample Average Approximation robust optimization Monte Carlo methods or large-scale MIP solvers is an advantage as is interest in freight transport logistics or electric vehicles.

As a formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research education innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years. The position is available from 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter by agreement.
