Job Summary

Compliance Specialist Fisheries Biologist

  • Responsible for fish passage operations at Companys dams and hydroelectric power plants on assigned rivers.
  • This position will be focused on the Penobscot and Union Rivers in Maine and work cooperatively with the larger Northeast Compliance team.
  • Oversee fish trapping sorting and trucking activities including oversight of seasonal fishway staff.
  • Coordination with State fisheries agencies establishing and maintaining compliance with fish passage license requirements and oversight of fish passage studies/reporting.
  • Provide guidance requiring a diversified knowledge of aquatic ecosystems to perform complex biological and ecological investigations.
  • Contribute and advise project teams to determine environmental impacts of proposed and existing civil works projects on aquatic ecosystems.
  • Accomplish environmental planning and protection through interpretation and implementation of laws executive orders regulations and policies dealing with natural resources.
  • Survey and analyze environmental conditions.
  • Provide technical support and leadership on project teams engaged in ecosystem restoration and protection in the areas of planning design and engineering.
  • Manage field investigations and the analysis of field data.
  • Identify safety and environmental hazards and then prepare and follow job safety plans appropriate for all work; the candidate must make safety the highest priority in performing all work activities.
  • Hiring of season staff and all administrative duties related to development of hiring materials onboarding and training of seasonal staff safe work observations and supervision and payroll services.
  • Work with the Licensing team supporting the hydro re-licensing efforts to include development of strategic plans for re-licensing development of FERC licensing documents and participate in hydro re-licensing settlement negotiations.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory licenses permits and codes of operation and conduct.
  • Prepare review and submit required reports to applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Outreach in coordination with the Community Relations team (hosting site visits and tours and informational presentations etc.


Required Skills:

  • Bachelors Degree in Environmental Studies Ecology Natural Resources Management or a related discipline.
  • A background in fisheries science and fish movement.
  • Experience in both lake and river water quality evaluations.
  • Possess the ability to perform and/or oversee high-level data analysis and subsequent report writing.
  • Strong ability to conduct and oversee environment studies and then present/review results in written reports.
  • Experience in field data collection using variable collection methods.
  • Excellent oral and written communications team-oriented work practices and strong statistical and technical problem solving skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel Access Word PowerPoint project scheduling and budgeting.
  • Must be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently and cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to keep data and documents organized and error free.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Valid drivers license required.

Budget: $80K-$110K

Target Bonus: 15%
