Purpose Statement
The job of Assistant Director of Transportation is done for the purpose/s of assisting the Director with directing programs and services; providing information and serving as a resource to others; supervising assigned staff; coordinating assigned program components and implementing and maintaining services within established guidelines and standards.
This job reports to Director of Transportation
Essential Functions
Assists with personnel functions (e.g. recruitment supervision professional development evaluations etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing enhancing productivity of personnel and ensuring that objective of Transportation programs are achieved within budget.
Assists with investigation and review of all accidents for the purpose of making recommendations according to district procedures.
Coordinates a variety of assigned projects and activities (e.g. placement of crosswalks and crossing guards DOT compliance accident investigations equipment acquisition etc.) for the purpose of delivering services on compliance with established guidelines.
Evaluates routes operations cost control and customer service issues for the purpose of making recommendations for resolution and/or improvement. Evaluates programs and/or projects for the purpose of carrying out and achieving objectives with area of responsibility.
Implements policies procedures and/or processes for the purpose of providing direction and/or complying with mandated requirements.
Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records (e.g. vehicle cost mileage records etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date reference and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. mileage records transportation budget input route report state reporting etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues meeting compliance requirements providing audit references and/or providing supporting materials for requested actions.
Serves as a liaison for the transportation department for the purpose of establishing and maintaining good rapport with state and local agencies district office administrations employees students and communities.
Supports the Director for the purpose of assisting in evaluation training and disciplining of school bus drivers school bus aides driver trainers dispatchers and other office staff; providing information for resolving issues developing administrative reports and supporting them in the overall leadership of site operations.
Participates as a member or facilitator in meetings workshops and seminars (e.g. training staff development for transportation staff and administrators etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues developing recommendations providing training and conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
Presents information on a variety of topics related to administrative responsibilities (e.g. overviews of programs/services training and staff development policies and procedures etc.) for the purpose of providing general information training others implementing actions etc.
Responds to issues involving staff parental concerns state department complaints conflicts in policies and regulations community concerns parental requests that may result in some negative impact and/or liability if not appropriately addressed for the purpose of identifying the relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math including calculations using fractions percents and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent codes policies regulations and/or laws; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; computer operations and management information systems.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities meetings and/or events; gather collate and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; workingas part of a team; working independently; being organized; and being attentive to detail.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a department large work unit and/or across several small work units; utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the jobs functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organizations services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling some climbing and balancing some stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting 20% walking and 30% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in a generally hazard free environment.
Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
Education: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.
