Join the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) as a Mechanic and play a critical role in maintaining the fleet that supports statewide law enforcement operations. This is hands-on high-impact work where your skills directly support public safety.The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is seeking a skilled and motivated team member to join our Troop A Garage in Pitt County NC as a Mechanic. This position performs hands-on work supporting the maintenance and repair of Patrol vehicles to ensure operational readiness. Responsibilities include performing regular preventive maintenance diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues across all vehicle systems providing support services to uniformed members for special assignments and maintaining a safe and efficient work environment in support of statewide law enforcement operations.

Management Prefers:
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair complex automotive systems using OEM manuals and diagnostic equipment.
- Working knowledge of electronic diagnostic systems including ABS traction control and onboard vehicle systems.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and repairs on law enforcement or fleet vehicles.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues determine root cause and implement effective repairs using proper tools and equipment.
- Ability to organize work prioritize tasks and maintain a safe and efficient shop environment.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Preventive Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance (e.g. every 6000 miles) including inspections diagnostics and repairs to ensure fleet readiness.
- Diagnostics & Repair: Conduct advanced diagnostics and repairs on engines transmissions electrical systems braking systems suspension and climate control systems.
- Electronic Systems: Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic vehicle systems using manufacturer specifications and diagnostic tools.
- Vehicle Preparation: Install emergency equipment decals and components on new patrol vehicles; remove equipment from decommissioned vehicles.
- Fleet Support: Support uniformed members through timely repairs and maintenance of operational vehicles.
- Specialized Work: Perform unique or specialized modifications and assist with special assignments and projects.
- Vehicle Transport: Operate rollback wrecker to transport vehicles for repair deployment or reassignment.
- Shop Operations: Maintain cleanliness organization and safety of the garage tools and equipment.

Typical work schedule: Monday Friday 8:00 AM 5:00 PM

Additional Requirements:
- NC Inspector License (as required under Sections 608 and 609 of the Clean Air Act) must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire if not already possessed at the time of employment.
- May require current certification as a Type I II III or Universal Technician in accordance with 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F.
This position requires the ability to perform physically demanding work including but not limited to:
- Lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently (Heavy Work)
- Standing walking bending kneeling crouching crawling and reaching for extended periods
- Working in both indoor and outdoor environments including exposure to heat cold noise and mechanical hazards
- Operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment
- Frequent use of hands for tools equipment and detailed mechanical work

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
AND
two (2) years of experience in the repair of vehicles and/or equipment;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Veterans and National Guard Preference
