Job Summary

Lipscomb Universitys School of Music in Nashville Tennessee invites applications for a full-time Instructor or tenuretrack Assistant Professor position in Athletic Pep Band and Director of Instrumental Studies beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will lead and expand the Lipscomb University athletic band program while contributing to the broader goals of the School of Music.

The primary responsibility of this position is to direct the Athletic Pep Band. The successful candidate will oversee recruit for and manage the University Pep Band program serve as a liaison with Athletics and Student Life and ensure compliance with all athletic and NCAA requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Direct and coordinate the university pep band at all home mens basketball games and select womens basketball games.
  • Lead and manage the pep band program including rehearsals performances and game day support.
  • Develop and implement strategies to recruit and retain pep band participants.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to elevate school spirit and create a vibrant game-day atmosphere.
  • Develop student leadership within the program.
  • Design and oversee a sustainable vision for the Pep Band in coordination with the Director of the School of Music and the Athletic Director utilizing data-driven insights to maintain program excellence and adapt to evolving student and university interests.
  • Participate in campus events and represent the band program in the community.
  • Manage annual budget equipment and resources for the athletic pep band program

This position also includes responsibilities as Director of Instrumental Studies coordinating aspects of the instrumental music program such as curriculum development assessment adjunct faculty supervision and student recruitment and mentorship.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop implement and oversee a comprehensive instrumental studies curriculum in collaboration with the music faculty.
  • Teach a weekly brass/woodwind studio class.
  • Recruit audition and retain talented student musicians.
  • Plan organize and promote performances tours recruiting events and special events.
  • Engage in outreach and recruitment activities with area schools community organizations and prospective students.
  • Manage budgets equipment and resources for the instrumental music program.

The position will include additional strategic responsibilities based on the candidates qualifications and the School of Musics needs focusing on one or more of the following areas: aural skills chamber music commercial ensembles conducting jazz band music education music industry music technology music theory private/applied lessons and string orchestra.

A masters degree in music is required (doctorate preferred) demonstrate creative achievement and teaching effectiveness and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills. Candidates should have experience with college athletics and pep band traditions as well as knowledge of the overall operation of an instrumental music program. Travel may be required for off-campus band trips and events. Lipscomb University is a Christian liberal arts institution located in the heart of Nashville.
