Manager of Sustainability Programs (01331.1)

Reporting to the AVP Campus Infrastructure Sustainability & Ancillary Services oversees the sustainability programs associated with the TRU Sustainability Office excluding those with an energy-related infrastructure focus which are managed by either the TRU Energy Manager or TRU Energy Specialist. The nature of the work the position oversees falls mostly within the following areas: supervising members of the office that report to the position; outreach programs throughout the TRU community (students staff and faculty); behaviour change initiatives; events; zero-waste programs; the offices social media platforms blog and website; report writing (both voluntary and mandatory reports); transportation initiatives; volunteer and ambassador programs; data base maintenance; and develops communications within TRU and the broader community.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• In collaboration with the AVP Campus Infrastructure Sustainability and Ancillary Services and the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee assists in defining policy and goals performance metrics the development and design of programs and developing a long-range plan for sustainability at TRU.
• Recruits interviews hires and manages staff to work on sustainability projects with well-defined deliverables. Staff members can include Administrative Assistants Research Assistants and Work Study and Co-op students. Oversees all aspects of TRUs Zero Waste Program
• Develops stake-holder partnerships throughout the community including with but not limited to members of the City of Kamloops sustainability-focused organizations and all levels of the education sector.
• Represents TRU externally at sector meetings and policy discussions on environmental and sustainability issues.
• Works closely with TRU units/departments/individuals that have existing sustainability initiatives e.g. Facilities Services Capital Planning Procurement Services and certain faculty members to enhance existing efforts by providing suggestions that lead to more sustainable operational systems to coordinate efforts that already exist across units/departments and to share ideas regarding successful initiatives across TRU.
• To coordinate and monitor on-going vehicle emission reduction strategies and platforms including E3 and Geotab.
• Examines current practices in academic support and operational units at TRU in order to develop new systems to reduce resource consumption and GHG emissions.
• Monitors and evaluates project and program effectiveness documents performance trends and recommends and implements modifications to improve effectiveness.
• Develops plans coordinates and implements activities including but not limited to seminars conferences workshops short courses clubs shows movie and public events and other programs and projects related to sustainability at TRU. Both the manner in which these activities are organized and the nature of their content should encourage buy-in and habit transformation from student faculty and staff community members to be more sustainability-minded.
• Attends various committees such as the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee and Fraser Basin Council.
• Researches and maintains working knowledge of best sustainability practices at peer institutions by meeting regularly with local provincial and national groups.
• Integrates academic research into the development of sustainability policy and programs drawing on local expertise at TRU.
• Prepares and recommends the budget for the Campus Sustainability Office.
• Prepares related grant proposals on behalf of TRU. Monitors verifies and reconciles expenditure of budgeted funds as appropriate.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

• Masters degree in Sustainability
• Five years related experience in an environment and sustainability programing in a public sector environment
• Demonstrated knowledge of fundamental issues related with progressive zero-waste recycling compost reduce and reuse programs
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
• Demonstrated advanced skill in computer applications particularly Microsoft Word Excel PowerPoint and desktop applications
• Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with staff students and members of the public
• Demonstrated ability to plan organize and prioritize work while managing multiple diverse and competing priorities to meet deadlines
