Job Summary

Job Title: Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

Reports to: School Nursing Coordinator/Campus Principal/Assigned RN

Dept./School: Assigned Campus

Primary Purpose:

A vocational nurse licensed by the Texas Board of Nursing who provides direct services to meet the needs of students (and staff) on a school campus or campuses. The school vocational nurse is responsible for implementing the district health program under the direct clinical supervision of the School Nursing Coordinator (RN or higher level practitioner) or school nurse/RN in a way that is best suited to the population of the campus(es). Clinical supervision by an RN MD Advanced Practice RN Physicians Assistant dentist or podiatrist is required by the Nurse Practice Act.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification: High School diploma or GED

Valid Texas license (LVN) issued by the Texas Board of Nursing

Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) certificates

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of basic first aid

Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills

Ability to use software to develop databases and do word processing

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Experience:

One-year experience in health-related position; experience working with school-age children

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Nursing Services

1. Provide direct care using school health protocols and individualized health plans (IHPs) established by the RN supervisor or medical advisor.

2. Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures.

3. Carry out mandatory screening programs collect data and complete required reports as directed.

4. Collaborates with campus principal school counselor teachers parents food service and other staff under the direction of the supervising RN regarding the health needs of the general population and those students with identified health conditions.

5. Provides direct care utilizing school health procedures and protocols and IHPs established by the RN supervisor and/or medical advisory.

6. Contributes to and implements the IHPs as established by the RN.

7. Communicate with parents regarding individual students as directed by the school nurse (RN).

8. Maintains current certifications in CPR use of the AED and state mandated screenings.

9. Attends Admission Review and Dismissal Committee (ARD) meetings Iif RN unable) of students with identified health needs collaboration with appropriate campus staff and RN regarding implementations of health related IEP items.

10. Educates faculty or staff as needed on health-related topics as planned and directed by the RN.

11. Communicates regularly with the School Nursing Coordinator or assigned School Nurse/RN regarding communicable diseases specific student health needs/concerns campus and department issues health and safety hazards and all non-routine matters.

12. When directed by the RN the LVN provides guidance to unlicensed assistive personnel on health-related tasks. Clerical

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Monitor the work and issue work assignments to health clinic aide and health services aide.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Frequent standing sitting kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking grasping/squeezing wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint assisting non-ambulatory students

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards bacteria and communicable diseases

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
