The Greenville Investigations Section of the Geotechnical Engineering Unit collects processes and organizes subsurface and laboratory data for geotechnical engineering designs and earthwork recommendations for roadways and structures.

We are seeking an entry level Field Investigations Professional to work with our rotary drill crew consultants and subcontractors to investigate projects in Divisions 1 7. Education in geotechnical engineering geology or earth sciences preferred.

In this role you will:

Review project designs maps and available data to plan subsurface investigations and soil/rock laboratory testing programs.
Visit sites to validate scoping and planning assumptions and map relevant surface features.
Mark test locations in the field per the exploration plan measuring from existing site features and using handheld GPS.
Coordinate locating utilities and traffic control.
Direct drillers in the execution of the boring plan and adjust the plan as needed.
Record all relevant boring data into a complete accurate and legible log.
Interpret subsurface conditions and build knowledge of regional geology.
Enter data into software for visualization of borings and laboratory tests in subsurface inventory and recommendation reports.

Field work may require occasional overnight travel outdoor work in varying weather and interactions with drilling equipment contractors and the public.

Applicant must be able to legally operate a State-owned vehicle to visit sites.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC16 $57983-$101470

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of geotechnical engineering and geology related to subsurface investigations using drill rigs cone penetration soundings hand augers and laboratory testing.
  • Experience interpreting maps and engineering plan sets.
  • Experience keeping notes and records of duties performed and conditions observed for preparing technical and production reports.
  • Demonstrated ability communicating technical information clearly and concisely to varied audiences verbally and/or in writing.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
