Construction Instructor

Job Purpose

The Construction Instructor will manage the NCCER Certification process of students in the construction pathway. The Construction Instructor will adhere to all requirements for training for industry recognized credentials including OSHA 10 and NCCER Core (Introduction to the Construction Trades). This individual agrees to maintain records and provide all documentation required by each credentialing entity. Furthermore the Construction Instructor will ensure that each student receives their certification by appropriately registering filing and submitting all steps necessary to complete the certification process. The Construction Instructor will also provide appropriate modeling and instruction of employability / soft skills necessary to attain and retain employment in the construction sector. They will also ensure effective communication as a member of the school team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary job duties and responsibilities:

• Uses approved curricula teaches workplace safety resulting in the awarding of the OSHA 10 Basic Safety certification.
• Implements construction laboratory safety plan and adheres to all procedures for reporting accident/injuries.
• Develops and coordinates a pacing guide to align with NCCER curricula. This pacing guide will ensure adequate time necessary for participants to learn construction skills that result in the achievement of industry credentials.
• Provides a supportive and optimistic learning environment in which participants are actively engaged in learning.
• Ensures participants are actively engaged in functional and appropriate construction / construction related activities that incorporate a variety of instructional methodologies including group work hands-on activities and multi-media presentation of information so as to account for a variety of learning styles.
• Coordinates with academic teachers to identify participants who require learning accommodations and is required to appropriately incorporate those accommodations into all instructional activities and testing with regards to the individuals dignity respect and privacy.
• Provides support and guidance to participants as they develop construction craft skills with an emphasis on employability / soft skills such as teamwork communication accountability and resiliency.
• Incorporates critical thinking and functional academics by providing project-based and/or problem-based learning opportunities to help students develop the communication and teamwork skills necessary to work through issues that are common to the building trades.
• Ensures proactive open and effective communication with other members of the school team especially in regard to issues and concerns related to participation performance and well-being.
• Mentors coaches and advises students about workforce skills needed to gain employment in this job sector. Use personal experiences to guide and positively influence students as it relates to leadership development self-discipline and optimism.
• In coordination with the School Director Director of Career-Technical Education and Placement Specialist helps build relationships and contacts with construction and/or construction related partners that may provide employment opportunities for graduates.
• Provides required performance reports; participates in relevant meetings workshops and/or committees.
• Maintains a detailed tracking system and completes all steps of certification processes ultimately resulting in the participants receiving their credentials in a timely manner.

Performance Outcomes

• Maintains and provides weekly updates on the appropriate Progress Tracker for each credential.
• Ensures the completion of Credit Flex Plans for each student so that students may be awarded available academic credits.
• Ensures that all students are appropriately enrolled in the correct DASL course.
• Completes all steps necessary for students to take the certification test and ensures that copies of any certifications earned are provided to the schools Placement Specialist for inclusion in the students Career Portfolio for graduation.
• Assists in securing Workforce Experience (WEX) opportunities for students and ensures that classroom learning is relevant and functional in supporting a students WEX placement.
• Participates in Quarterly Workforce Advisory Committee as needed.
• Actively assists in the recruitment and retention of students in this pathway especially as it relates to improved attendance and certification completion.

Qualifications Education and Experience

Necessary and desirable qualifications include but are not limited to the following:

• No restrictions in securing an Ohio Department of Education vocational teacher license or permit.
• Exceptional craft skills in the area of construction

• Experience Preferred:
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction or a construction-related field
• Proficient with NCCER preferred.
• Education Preferred:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent

Working Conditions

This job is performed in craft classroom / laboratory environment but will ideally extend to an in-field learning opportunity.

Physical Requirements

The usual and customary methods of performing the functions required in a construction / craft learning environment which include the following physical capabilities: lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling operating machine hand tools and power tools.
