JOB DESCRIPTION:

Thompson Rivers Universityislocatedon the traditional lands of theTkemlúpsteSecwépemc(Kamloops campus) and theTexelc(Williams Lake campus) withinSecwépemculucw the traditional and unceded territory of theSecwépemc. Our region also extends into the territories of theStátimc Nlakapamux NuxalkTŝilhqotin Dakelh and Syilx peoples.

TheDepartment of Natural Resource Sciences (NRS)invites applications( foratenure-track position at the rank of assistant/associate professor(Tripartite)inone of the followingareas: fisheriesmanagement/conservation wildlife management/conservationand/or ecosystem disturbance. Responsibilities include:1)contributing to the teaching and missionof the NRS Departmentat the undergraduate and graduate level;2)developing and teachingcoursesfocusedontheir specialty;3)participatinginDepartmental Facultyand University committees and 4)developinga robust research program.

ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:We are seeking exceptionalcandidate whospecializesinone ofthe areas of fisheriesmanagement/conservationand/orwildlife management/conservationand/orecosystemdisturbance ideal candidate will have aPhDdegree.

The candidate musthave: 1)the ability to teach effectively at the undergraduateand graduatelevel;2)aPhDinfisheriesmanagement/conservation wildlife management/conservationand/or ecosystem disturbance(e.g. wildfire pests);3)the ability tocommunicate effectively with studentsIndigenous groupsprofessionals and the general public4)andthe ability todevelop a robust research program.

Preferred qualificationsinclude:experience teaching coursesinfisheriesmanagement wildlifemanagementand/or ecosystem disturbance; trainingin resource management including experienceinteracting withnatural resource agencies and diverse stakeholders.

Preference willalsobe given to applicants whoseexpertisecomplements that of other facultyin theDepartment.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCE SCIENCES(NRS):NRS is housed within the Faculty of Science. The Department hasfourteenfull-timefaculty. At present four of thosefaculty are research chairs while the remainingten areresearch and teaching of the faculty are retiring Department offers programming in:

  • Bachelorof Natural Resource Science(BNRS)

  • Certificate in Wildfire Science

  • Certificate in Regenerative Agriculture

  • Diploma inRegenerative Agriculture

  • Mastersof Science-Environmental Sciences

TheDepartment has proposed twoconcentrationsin the BNRS degree(proposed start date 2026): wildfire science and ecosystem goal of the concentrations is to have graduates meetthe requirements to be a Registered Professional Forester (RPF)(wildfire concentration)from the Forest ProfessionalsofBritish Columbiaa Registered Professional Biologist from the College of Applied Biology(ecosystem management concentration) anda Professional Agrologist from the Association of BC Professional Agrologists(both concentrations).Students graduating with thecurrentBNRS degree meet the educational requirements to become aRegistered Professional Biologist and a Professional Agrologist. Current graduates are also eligible to apply(via the Allied Science Forester in Training) to become anRPF.

Kamloops isa wonderful location to teach and conduct research in the field of natural resource sciences. Kamloops has 200 lakes within an hour of the campus world-class rainbow trout fishing and salmon runs and the regional offices of provincial and federal trips are easy to organize due to the proximity of forestsgrasslandsand addition TRU has the Wells Gray education and researchcentreresearch/teaching facility nearClearwater BC( department also hasestablishedrelationships with various Indigenous groups in the interior of BC.
