Position Description

Principal Middle School

Goal: The Middle School Principal serves as the instructional and operational leader of the school responsible for creating a safe supportive and academically rigorous learning environment. The principal fosters a culture of high expectations ensures compliance with state and district policies and leads continuous improvement efforts to support student achievement and staff development.

Minimum Qualifications and Training:

  • Masters Degree
  • Professional Tennessee Teaching License with an endorsement in Educational Administration/Supervision
  • Minimum of five (5) years of administrative or supervisory experience in an educational setting required; middle school administrative experience preferred
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience as a classroom teacher; middle school experience preferred
  • Ability to prepare clear concise accurate and complete reports including the disaggregation of school data
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels
  • Proficient in the use of computers to include spreadsheets databases and word processing applications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assumes full responsibility for the organization implementation and administration of the total school program as it relates to student faculty and other assigned personnel while following state standards
  • Ensures that all goals for students and staff align with the districts strategic plan and vision
  • Manages faculty and staff including but not limited to providing clear direction support and feedback as well as holding staff accountable for fulfilling their job responsibilities in alignment with the schools/districts mission vision and educational standards while following state standards
  • Conducts ongoing formal and informal evaluations for all employees to ensure that standards are achieved compliance with job expectations are met and performance is maximized. This includes regularly assessing teaching methodologies classroom management techniques and adherence to curriculum standards. Provides constructive feedback and support to empower educators in refining their instructional practices while fostering a culture of continuous improvement
  • Oversees curriculum development and instructional strategies ensuring alignment with grade-level state standards while fostering enrichment intervention and differentiated learning opportunities
  • Makes all instructional decisions by the continual analysis of student data and directs the adjustment of instruction and develops the master schedule to support data trends
  • Establishes a culture of academic excellence by establishing high expectations maintaining effective professional learning communities (PLCs) by holding administrative oversight and promoting continuous improvement
  • Establishes and upholds clear expectations for student and staff behavior addressing concerns promptly and consistently to maintain a respectful and productive school climate
  • Maintains high accountability for teachers staff members and students while celebrating their successes
  • Ensures compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations related to Special Education including IEP implementation and due process requirements
  • Develops implements and continuously evaluates a comprehensive school-wide discipline plan that promotes a positive safe and orderly learning environment
  • Creates opportunities and possesses the courage to promote shared decision-making when appropriate while ultimately considering that student learning is paramount determination to any decision
  • Cultivates leadership capacity among staff by supporting professional growth mentoring emerging leaders and strengthening the schools leadership team
  • Works collaboratively with district leadership to ensure adherence to policies procedures and regulatory requirements while addressing school needs and priorities
  • Adheres to policies principles and procedures for the internal school accounting as approved by the Arlington Community Board of Education in compliance with the Internal School Accounting Act
  • Assumes full responsibility for the organization implementation and administration of the total school program as it relates to student faculty and other assigned personnel
  • Maintains and accounts for the funds generated by internal Student Activity Accounts and provides oversight and support for School Support Organizations to ensure compliance for the use and distribution of these funds
  • Assumes oversight of the planning and supervision of all extra-curricular and co-curricular activities while providing guidance to associated coaches/sponsors
  • Administers the athletic program in accordance with the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA)
  • Adheres to professional ethical and moral standards of conduct in the transaction of all school business
  • Prepares and submits to the appropriate agencies (Arlington Community Schools Board of Education State Department of Education etc.) all required records and reports
  • Establishes effective communication with students teachers parents and community organizations and provides opportunities for community involvement in all phases of the school program
  • Serves as supervisor of the school plant and facilities and requests the maintenance necessary for insuring the health and safety of all students and personnel
  • Adheres to due process procedures in all matters relating to the rights welfare and personal safety of students and personnel
  • Adheres to all policies pertaining to the National School Lunch Program which are applicable to the management and operation of the school cafeteria program
  • Assumes responsibility for seeing that the school complies with the Occupational Safety and Health Act and for keeping faculty and staff members informed of their responsibilities pertaining to student safety
  • Improves professional skills and knowledge; assumes educational leadership roles; and performs duties in a professional honest and responsible manner
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises students teachers visitors and community while on campus. Also supervises all in general common areas after school activities and any additional school sponsored events when school is not in session.

Working Conditions: Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.

  • Middle School campus environment (outdoor activities and indoor activities)
  • Consistent and prompt attendance is imperative for this role
  • Requires extended hours including evenings and weekends
  • Involves frequent interaction with students staff parents and community stakeholders

Salary: $127126 - $137605 pending similar/like experience


The middle school principal maintains a forty-hour (40) workweek and works additional hours as required to carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the position. This is a twelve (12) month position.
