The Remuneration and Benefits Manager is accountable for leading the design implementation governance and continuous improvement of SAPREFs remuneration benefits and payroll frameworks. The role acts as the organisations subject matter expert on reward strategy benefits administration and payroll governance ensuring that reward practices are competitive equitable sustainable and compliant with South African legislation.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
1. Strategic Reward and Compensation Management
Design implement and maintain SAPREFs remuneration structures including:
Cost to Company (CTC) frameworks
Salary bands and progression models
Ensure alignment of reward strategy with organisational objectives affordability internal equity and market competitiveness.
Develop remuneration adjustment proposals and scenario analyses for approval.
Provide expert advice on rewardrelated risks trends and emerging best practices.
2. Benefits and Payroll Governance
Oversee the administration governance and optimisation of employee benefit programmes including:
Retirement funds
Medical aid schemes (e.g. Discovery Momentum)
Group risk benefits (life funeral disability income protection)
Provide assurance over payroll activities ensuring accurate and timeous processing of:
Salaries allowances benefits and deductions
Payroll account reconciliations and journals
Statutory submissions
Implement structured selfaudits to ensure data integrity and compliance.
Maintain pay and benefits policies to ensure they are relevant and up to date.
3. Benchmarking Analytics and Reporting
Conduct regular remuneration and benefit benchmarking using approved survey providers
Analyse remuneration data trends and KPIs to support strategic and operational decisionmaking.
Prepare and qualityassure:
People metrics and executive dashboards
Statutory and regulatory reports (SARS DoL Stats SA COID)
4. Compliance Governance and Legislation
Ensure full compliance with relevant legislation including:
Income Tax Act
Labour and employment legislation impacting remuneration and benefits
Embed sound corporate governance practices within all reward activities.
Monitor and interpret legislative changes impacting pay benefits and payroll and lead implementation of required changes.
Support internal and external audits related to remuneration benefits and payroll practices.
5. Budget and Cost Management
Manage the Remuneration and Benefits budget and contribute to the broader HR budget.
Manage payroll and labour cost planning and forecasting.
Track and monitor actuals versus budget and identify costsaving and efficiency opportunities.
6. People Management and Leadership
Lead coach and develop Remuneration Benefits and Payroll team.
Set clear performance objectives provide regular feedback and support development planning.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement compliance accountability and service excellence.
Handle sensitive and confidential information with the highest level of integrity and discretion.
Requirements
BCom Degree in Human Resources Finance or related field
810 years experience in Compensation and Benefits within a medium to largescale organisation.
Minimum 3 years experience in a management or senior specialist role.
Strong exposure to payroll governance and HRIS environments.
SARA Reward Specialist or Global Remuneration Professional (GRP) advantageous
Technical and Professional Skills
Advanced MS Excel capability (Pivot Tables advanced lookups dashboards).
Proven experience with SAP HCM or similar HRIS platforms.
Strong numerical analytical and data interpretation skills.
Excellent report writing presentation and stakeholder engagement skills.
