Job Summary

Description

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Ophthalmology and Clinical Supervisor the Ophthalmic Technician evaluates patients visual status documents past medical and ocular histories confirms medical drug regimen quantifies visual acuity performs diagnostic visual testing assists physicians with ophthalmic care of patients and is responsible for the maintenance of ophthalmic equipment.

Assists an Eye Center Physician and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostics tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problem.



Responsibilities
  • Documents patient complaint past medical history and medication use.
  • Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician review including but not limited to central and peripheral visual field tests; color vision tests; tonometry tonography and tensilon tonography tests to determine intraocular pressure and equality and reaction prior to dilation. Performs autorefraction lensometry measures and quantifies eyeglass prescription.
  • Directs the flow of patients examined by the Eye Center Physician; obtains medical and personal data for patient charts; screens patients for conditions excluding ocular examination. ocular imagining alleviates patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures method of treatment.
  • Calibrates and maintains all instruments used including but not limited to bio-microscopes lensometer keratometer slit lamp phoropter perimeter and tonometer; cleans equipment.
  • Assists in patient transportation between exam rooms within the eye clinic.
  • Performs other duties assigned relating to the eye clinic and patient care.
  • Assists in training and education of Ophthalmic Technicians.
  • Oversees clinical operations while reporting to the Clinical Supervisor and Director of Service.


Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

1 year minimum as a Medical Office Assistant or equivalent

Ophthalmic Technician Certification preferred

Basic MS Office Suite skills required

Good communication skills with patients and staff to provide information
