CBC Toronto is looking for a dynamic creative and curious producer to lead our provincial weekend morning radio program Fresh Air. From Thunder Bay to Windsor Sudbury to London the show connects listeners across Ontario.

You have knowledge and understanding of communities that make up Ontario. Reporting to the Executive Producer Audio & Programming you are driven by a desire to uncover stories that the Fresh Air audience will find relatable and insightful. You are interested in exploring ways for Fresh Airs content to live on other platforms. You have no hesitation to pivot the program when breaking news happens.

You will also lead the production of Big City Small World - our weekly eclectic arts program highlighting global music created by local artists.

This is a permanent full-time position based in Toronto. The work week is Wednesday - Sunday.

Key responsibilities:

  • Together with the program host searches the province for Fresh Air stories and voices that best reflect those stories.

  • Lines up each days show.

  • Ability to respond to breaking news and confidently adjust programming to provide the latest information to the audience.

  • Identifies program and segment ideas for both digital and broadcast suggests and books guests or interviewees conducts pre-interviews prepares background notes questions and writes interview scripts.

  • Vets the work of others.

  • Gives performance feedback to on-air talent.

  • Guides selection of music for segments and programs

  • May assume production responsibilities including teching editing and recording for a program or segments of a program.

  • Identify select and help line up appropriate musical selections for the program.

  • Troubleshoots both editorial and technical issues as they come up.

  • Able to work flexible hours work overtime and travel as needed.


What you bring:

  • Ability and confidence to make good decisions rapidly under deadline; ability to handle stress and work well under pressure.

  • Ability to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities to plan and prioritize and to analyze complex journalistic and operational issues.

  • Passion for local storytelling and the ability to identify relevant audience-focused stories which reflect issues being discussed by people in Ontario.

  • Leadership skills to inspire and direct creative experienced and self-motivated colleagues with a consultative respectful and team approach style.

  • Ability to generate original story ideas.

  • Superior editorial judgment.

  • Exceptional communication skills.

  • Solid understanding of CBC/Radio-Canadas Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Additional Requirements:

  • University degree or equivalent in journalism and/or communications.

  • Five years journalistic experience of which at least three must involve work in radio and/or television broadcasting.

  • This position requires you to work full-time in the CBC Toronto office.
