Do you love the process of taking a raw concept and turning it into a working reality Leidos is looking for a smart versatile Engineering Technician to join our Maritime Systems Division in San Diego. We operate in a fast-paced high-momentum environment where we rapid-prototype a variety of cutting-edge ocean systems. We dont just planwe build test and iterate quickly.
You will join a medium-sized team meaning youll have the space to make your mark and the visibility to see your contributions matter all while collaborating closely with other multidiscipline experts. You will be an integral part of the development lifecycle: identifying the problem developing the concept supporting iterative design and testing in the lab and field and ultimately helping deliver the final product demonstration to the customer.

What Youll Get to Do
- Mechanical and Electrical Fabrication
- Wire Harnessing: Fabricate complex wire harnesses utilizing splicing crimping and soldering techniques for Molex and various other connectors and cable assemblies.
- PCB Assembly: Install surface-mount (SMT) and through-hole components on multi-layer printed circuit boards using approved soldering standards.
- Technical Literacy: Interpret and execute engineering assembly drawings Bills of Materials (BOMs) manufacturing procedures and detailed work instructions.
- Mechanical Assembly: Utilize a wide range of hand and power tools (e.g. torque wrenches drills precision tools) to integrate mechanical components into larger system assemblies.
- Problem Solving: Independently troubleshoot and resolve assembly issues to ensure project momentum.
- Quality Documentation: Maintain rigorous documentation standards by accurately completing serial number records traveler logs and work orders.
- Testing and Data Collection
- System Validation: Execute comprehensive electrical testing and data collection for custom assemblies utilizing a blend of proprietary in-house procedures and COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) equipment.
- Technical Diagnostics: Leverage a diverse suite of diagnostic toolsincluding oscilloscopes signal/network analyzers and precision metersto validate system performance and identify anomalies.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Manage the digital capture of test results via Microsoft Office ensuring that raw data is organized into clear actionable technical records.
- Assembly Encapsulation
- Materials Expertise: Apply various encapsulation materialsincluding urethanes silicones and epoxiesin strict accordance with required procedures and industry best practices.
- Casting Preparation: Prepare components for casting through precision sanding painting and fixturing to ensure optimal adhesion and alignment.
- Mold Fabrication: Perform the end-to-end mold creation process including material mixing vacuum degassing pouring and post-processing.
- Contamination Control: Perform precision cleaning of electrical and mechanical assembly parts using isopropyl alcohol and other approved solvents per established procedures.
- Surface Engineering: Execute application-specific surface preparation using approved hand-sanding techniques to ensure optimal bonding and finish.
- Lab & Equipment Maintenance
- Workspace Stewardship: Maintain a clean organized and safe laboratory environment to ensure operational efficiency and compliance with safety standards.
- Equipment Readiness: Oversee the upkeep of lab equipment and assembly fixtures performing routine repairs and collaborating with project personnel to ensure all tools remain in peak working condition.
Youll Bring These Qualifications
- Education & Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent with at least 4 years of related technical experience.
- Proven hands-on experience in electrical and mechanical assembly including precision soldering and the use of basic electrical test and measurement (T&M) equipment.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting schematics blueprints and ASME Y14 engineering drawings.
- Experience operating a variety of machine shop and woodworking tools (e.g. grinders routers sanders band saws and sandblasters).
- Security & Compliance:
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance (interim clearance required for start).
- Technical Competencies:
- Diagnostic Tool Proficiency: Experience operating lab test equipment and diagnostic tools including oscilloscopes signal/network analyzers and precision meters.
- Surface Preparation: Experience in the surface preparation and treatment of mechanical components (e.g. aluminum brass) in accordance with specific production instructions.
- Software: Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent productivity software.

- Interpersonal Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills with a collaborative mindset and the ability to seek clarity and guidance when navigating complex tasks.
- Work Ethic: Self-motivated and detail-oriented with a proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Physical Ability: Ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace; physical mobility to navigate lab office and warehouse environmentsincluding frequent movement around piers docks and facility spaceswith the ability to stoop kneel reach for extended periods and transport objects weighing up to 50 lbs across the facility.
- Manual Dexterity: Constant use of hands and fingers to precisely operate machinery tools and computer equipment.
- Environmental Adaptability: Ability to climb ladders up to 20 ft and work comfortably in loud production environments various temperatures and inclement weather. This includes a willingness to work aboard marine vessels of various sizes occasionally on an overnight basis.
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have
- Education:
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or a related field; however additional relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Specialized Certification:
- United States Navy Miniature/Microminiature Module Test and Repair (2M/MTR) Certification.
- Industry Standards: Current or prior certification in the following IPC standards or equivalent industry-recognized certifications in electronics assembly and workmanship:
- IPC J-STD-001 (Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies)
- IPC-A-610 (Acceptability of Electronics Assemblies)
- IPC WHMA-A-620 (Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies)

Pay Range $57850.00 - $104575.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline onlyand not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
