The College of Arts & Sciences Deans Office is seeking to fill a Senior Computer Specialist position as part of the expanding CAS IT Infrastructure team. The computing environment served by this position is complex along several dimensions and the successful candidate will have to thoughtfully blend central standards and guidelines with local expertise and requirements to create an environment that is stable and reliable yet provides flexible service. Equally important to the technical challenge is the ability to successfully interact with faculty and staff to enable them to complete their research missions at the University.

In collaboration with CAS IT Leadership and under general guidance from the Manager of Infrastructure the focus of the position is to provide primary support for complex computing labs utilized for instruction and research as well as enterprise servers within CAS in support of research teaching and operations - and their system environments including production development testing and training.

About us: CAS ITs core mission is to provide critical IT support to the faculty and staff in the college. We are an agile and collaborative team working to continually make technology less cumbersome for our customers while ensuring our solutions are secure scalable and in service of the College and UWs mission of teaching and research.

Systems Administrator: 50%

Install configure and maintain servers networks and system software. Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure high levels of availability and security.

Responsible for the complex nature of Computing Labs that support instruction and computing needs for students and faculty. Engaging with faculty and departments to determine the computing needed in the lab environments to ensure we are providing the high-touch level of support needed to support all computing labs currently housed in departments.

Manage user accounts permissions and access rights in systems such as Active Directory.

Collaborate with other IT staff to support end-users and resolve technical issues.

This position must be able to work independently and within a team environment managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

System Maintenance 20%:

Perform regular system backups and recovery operations. Apply operating system updates patches and configuration changes.

Security 20%:

Work with leadership and the team to create a strong framework to implement and enforce security policies and procedures. Evaluate and recommend new hardware and software solutions. Ensure compliance with licensing agreements and IT policies.

Documentation 10%:

Maintain documentation of systems configurations and procedures.

Providing operational technical and administrative elements that ensure the availability reliability security and performance of the systems necessary to support the needs of the business.

Maintaining a high level of technical competency provide documentation be a team participant contribute effectively to projects and conduct oneself in a professional manner.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor in Computer Science or a related field. Experience can substitute for degree requirements.

  • 35 years in sys admin role research computing or scientific computing environment.

Technical Skills:

  • Linux/Unix systems administration

  • Scripting (Python Bash etc.)

  • HPC schedulers (Slurm PBS)

  • Cloud platforms (AWS Azure GCP)

  • Keep current with campus standards technology developments and College guidelines to ensure that the highest standards of reliability and performance are met.

General requirements:

  • Familiarity with academic research processes data lifecycle security best practices.

  • Demonstrated experience working with minimal supervision both independently and in a collaborative team environment and within deadlines.

  • Demonstrated client service skills and the ability to work with personnel of various levels of technical background.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with a variety of desktop and workgroup server computing environments.

  • Self-motivated resourceful and proactive.

  • Operationally minded with experience developing implementing and managing effective processes and systems.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and creatively solve problems.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proven customer service orientation with a history of delivering high quality products on time.

  • Ability to translate complex issues into comprehensible ideas and concepts with both technical and non-technical staff.
