PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The City of Aurora invites you to join a team dedicated to fostering aquatic safety and athletic excellence. As an Assistant Swim Coach you will play a vital role in mentoring swimmers and refining their techniques in a supportive environment. This position offers the opportunity to shape the local swim team program through hands-on instruction and active participation in competitive meets. Ideal candidates possess a passion for the water and a commitment to providing exceptional service to our community members. Your expertise in pool safety and advanced swimming maneuvers will help participants of all skill levels reach their full potential. The hiring rate for this role is $18.00/hour

This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee) where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leavein accordance withthe Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

Position overview.

The Assistant Swim Coach performs a variety of routine tasks related to aquatic safety. This role instructs participants in swimming and aquatic safety.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instructs participants at advanced levels of swimming techniques and aquatic safety
  • Performs routine tasks to maintain safety in swim practice sessions
  • Enforces pool rules
  • Maintains records relating to swim teams
  • Provides information to patrons and parents
  • Attends in-service training sessions pertaining to the swim team program
  • Attends and assist with swim meets including set up and take down for home meets
  • Creates and implements workouts based on patron skill level
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge skills and abilities may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with swim instruction and/or coaching

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of pool safety and emergency action plans.
  • Knowledge of swim team program structure and course material.
  • Basic knowledge of advanced swim techniques

Skills:

  • Skilled in swim instruction techniques
  • Skilled in customer relations including patrons and parents of swim team members

Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain a safe environment at work site.
  • Able to perform and demonstrate skills that are being taught in classes.
  • Able to pass internal swim team trainings
  • Able to create and adapt workouts based on patron needs and skill

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Concussion training
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certifications

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Swim instructor certification

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 25 pounds
  • Regular walking and standing
  • Regular climbing bending kneeling and crouching
  • Hand/foot/eye coordination to perform and demonstrate appropriate fitness skills
  • Vision to read instructions and respond to emergencies
  • Hearing and speech communication for communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment:

  • Works both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to dust noise chemicals water and other conditions found in an aquatic environment.

Equipment Used:

  • This role may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle cell phone tools etc.) in the course of their employment.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16 April 10 July 2 and December 24.
