Job Summary

The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TP&M) is responsible for the safe efficient and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the Citys streets supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living working and doing business in New York City. The Divisions responsibilities include planning street design technical analysis signs transit development freight mobility and markings ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants pedestrians and cyclists. TP&M is seeking a motivated candidate to serve as a Public Engagement Specialist for the Public Engagement Group a critical outreach support team for the TP&M Division. This unit supports Vision Zero safety initiatives cited in the Agencys Strategic Plan and NYC Streets Plan and has been critical to the agencys public engagement strategy.

The Ambassadors provide capacity for public input in the development of Street Improvement Projects (SIPs) and supports the explicit goals of Project-Based Outreach and Public Awareness. Duties include developing outreach plans communicating with the public at large circulating informational and educational materials assisting in workshops conducting targeted education campaigns staffing events synthesizing outreach efforts through data analysis and deliverables and reporting on all relevant project related activities. Surveying will be a large part of the job with merchant surveys assessing loading and delivery needs along commercial corridors and intercept surveys capturing data at static positions within a given project area.

Typical projects include support for public plazas bike lane development Open Streets busway/ bus lane development and Citi Bike expansion. This is an opportunity to work with a team dedicated to improving safety accessibility and mobility throughout New York City. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in transportation planning public engagement and experience in or with the public sector.

Preferred Skills
Preference given to candidates who have experience in customer service communicating with the public and conflict resolution. Ability to speak Spanish Chinese or another language is a plus as well as proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of Adobe Suite and some GIS will be valued.
Preference will be given to candidate possessing a drivers license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of employment i this position.

Additional Information
All scheduling will be set in advance but flexibility is expected. To conduct effective outreach work-week schedules can either be Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday during the outreach season (as needed). Winter schedules are normally Monday through Friday. Shifts will be staggered to include some early morning or evening events as needed.

Hours/Shift: 35hrs/ 10 AM - 6 PM

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in 1 above.
